2020 Cooling Fan Wiring Diagrams

2018 - 2020 Workshop Manuals do not provide any explanation of Cooling Fan operation in their System Components document.

In the 2021 Workshop Manual, however, the following description is offered...

Cooling Fan

Variable Speed Electric Fans

The PCM monitors certain parameters, such as engine coolant temperature, vehicle speed, A/C ON/OFF status, A/C pressure to determine engine cooling fan needs.

The PCM controls the fan speed and operation using a duty cycle output on the FCV circuit. The fan controller (located at or integral to the engine cooling fan assembly) receives the FCV command and operates the cooling fan at the speed requested (by varying the power applied to the fan motor).

The fan controller is able to detect certain failure modes within the fan motors. Under certain failure modes, such as a motor that is drawing excessive current, the fan controller shuts the fans off. Fan motor concerns may not set a specific DTC . With the fan motor disconnected from the fan controller, voltage may not be present at the fan controller.

Relay Control Fans

The PCM controls the fan operation through the fan control LFC (single speed applications), and LFC (low speed), MFC (medium speed), HFC (high speed) for multiple speed applications. Some applications have the xFC circuit wired to 2 separate relays.

Although the PCM output circuits are called LFC, MFC, and HFC, cooling fan speed is controlled by a combination of these outputs.

Good stuff but for the 21 diagram, the wire that is being removed for the HD (brushless) fan fix is not shown. C1035b, pin 47. A black wire with a violet tracer. What was it's purpose in the circuit?

Relating to the 2021 Expedition, with Connector details edited to conserve space and to better facilitate discussion, below is:

1) Connector C1035B Details listing, focusing on circuit ID for Pin 47 and the Cooling Fan Relays;

2) Connector C1035C Details with a comparable focus;

3) A combined 2021 Brush/Brushless Cooling Fans wiring diagram...

So pin 47 on a brushless (HD) cooling fan system isn't used? That's why it can be cut without any issue? But what was causing the short in the circuit and the potential fire?

Did fire recall today. No melting issues and went good. First one they did and took 1 hr 15 min for tech to complete. I pretty much observed the whole thing while bsing with him. Good dealership and know sales and service managers real well. Need wiper arms replaced but they are still on backorder.

The open recall has finally cleared from my Ford Pass app. It's been about three weeks since I had the fix done so apparently it takes some time for the service records to be updated in Ford's system. Now the only one that shows up is for the wipers.

It took about 3 weeks for the fire recall to clear from my VIN/Ford pass. And I don't think they have the parts for the wiper recall yet.

Funny about that. They have the parts to install on new trucks but don't or won't install the parts on those that have been sold. Unreal.
