Well age and wear have caught up to my faithful '98 XLT's keys and locks. I'm down to one key and no remote and the key no longer works in the doors leaving me to leave driver's door unlocked all the time. Hoping to get up with a locksmith and get new keys and remotes made, just wanted to ask here if anyone has had this done?

I've had spare keys made. Luckily it was in good shape so I didn't have to rekey the locks. Costs about $70 bucks or so. The remotes are easy. You can order them from Amazon and program them yourself.

Well new remotes arrived today so hopefully will be home in time tomorrow to try programming! Then I'll work on the key issue!

Its super easy, just have to be quick with the hands. Get in, lock doors, put the key in and turn from on to run 8 times in 10 seconds, last time leave in run position. locks will go up and down, then you push the button on the remotes, one at a time.

New keys are harder if you only have one correct? I’ve programmed new keys but I always had two to start from.

If you have an ace hardware near you, they can copy your existing key, they copy it exactly, meaning the chip inside the 2 keys will have the exact same code, this means that the car will not recognize them as 2 different keys, so if like me you have 1 seat setting set for each key (wifes and mine) that will no longer work as the car sees the same key, but otherwise everything else works fine. Cost about $70 for the blank, plus cutting the key and programming the chip at ace and has worked perfectly for more than 2 years.
