Hey there. New to Expeditions and thus to this forum. Just purchased this 2012 EL from a Chevy dealer on Monday. It seems in very good condition for being 10 years old... and under the hood is amazingly clean. Noticed a mild rattling sound on acceleration intermittently. Found out that this is a common problem... assuming it's related to IWE. Read in the forum about switching to 4A when it appeared. Did that and the sound goes away. Replaced the 4WD actuator but that did not resolve the issue. Wondering if someone could advise us on specific steps to diagnose/find the problem. Hoping that this is a relatively inexpensive adventure that I can fix myself. Grateful for forums like these where we can tap into the wisdom and experience of others. Thank you!

It could be a failing solenoid. In my 07 , the solenoid is on the passenger side near the radiator.

Had the very same problem. Replaced the check valve in the vacuum system. Fixed.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure I have the terminology right, but I did replace the 4WD actuator already. I believe that's also referred to as a solenoid. I've attached a picture of what I replaced. Is this what you're referencing? If so, it didn't resolve my problem.

No, that's not it.

Try motorcraft part number YG429. Not sure if that's right for your vehicle, but it should give you an idea.

Check your vacuum lines going to to both IWEs on the hubs. I replaced mine and the IWE grinding I heard in my LF hub went away. After 10 years the lines start to crack especially if you live in a heavy winter area.

I had same problem with my 2011. Replaced solenoid and check valve, ended up it was the hose that goes from the solenoid to both hubs. You can test it by putting vacuum on each hub and see if it leaks down.

I actually replaced both IWEs today since they were also loose. No more grinding or clunking from the hubs now.

There is a TSB for the related hoses cracking said my tech. I just had the hoses replaced along with the solenoid replacement on my 2012. Those hoses and solenoid were about 60-80 bucks. Rides great at speed now.

Do you think you could get the TSB# from your tech to post here?
