Hey guys new to the forum, new to fords. Just bought a 2020 Expedition Max Limited to replace my 2010 Z71 Suburban. Before that I had an 01 Suburban. I use the big utes for towing my pop up camper and for road trips with the family (6 kids though only three left at home) to Minnesota and Savannah GA.

I'm really a VW guy tbh; I commute in an 03 Jetta TDI (50 mpg) and have been driving (and working on lol) VWs since the late 80s.

I am liking the Expy a lot. Decent mileage with good power when needed with the turbo'd V6. More passenger room than the suburban, with a little less "trunk" space behind the third row. Missing the 4w high and low my Chevy had, but it's not a big deal. Overall rise and driving experience isn't all that different, which is a good thing.

Since I live in the rust belt, I'm going to take it to Krown to get it rust-proofed. Rust is what made me move on from the 'Burban. Both of them. Right now the Expy is basically immaculate, and I want to keep it that way.

Looking forward to learning about the truck here. Thanks for reading.

If you had bought the tow package option, you would get 4 low, and such. Kinda surprised you bought it for towing and went without the HD tow package.

I bought it used. It has the receiver and 7-pin plug.

Is there something like the RPO sticker you find on GM trucks?

They all have that.
You got the smaller rear axle, 3.23 gears vs the tow pack 3.73 gears. Tow pack also includes a bigger cooling system, trans cooler, and often a rear locking differential depending on the years as they split those up in later years.

I found that I do have the plug behind the little cubby where the factory brake controller goes. Ordered one to install; I understand it needs to be turned on in the coding to work.

From what I've read (mostly here) there are two towing packages--normal and HD. Is what you're describing (different ratio in the diff and coolers) part of both or just the HD? Or am I mistaken about there being different tow packages?

My FX4 came with the max tow package. 3.73 gearing..increased cooling..back up assist..factory brake controller. Rated at 9200 lbs towing and 1769 lbs payload. Surprised how nice it tows our almost 8K pound camper.

If you have a coin holder on your dash by the start button, you don't have HD tow package. HD tow comes with the dumb reverse back up knob for people that don't know how to drive!

Every Expedition comes standard with the "Class IV Trailer Tow Prep Package" which includes the hitch receiver and 7 pin and 4 pin connectors. It can tow 6,000 lbs in this configuration. If you upgrade to the "HD tow package" it includes additional upgrades that allow it to tow up to 9,300 lbs depending on configuration. The HD tow package includes the 3.73 gears, additional cooling, Pro-trailer backup assist, trailer brake controller, and other upgrades. An easy way to tell if you have the HD tow package is if there is a round knob on the dash (the Pro-trailer backup assist). The trailer brake controller can be added to the standard tow package and plugs into that connector behind the coin holder in the dash (not sure if true on the 2022s yet). It requires the software to be activated by either the dealer or Forscan.

Ok that’s what I thought. I only tow a 10’ box pop up camper, so I don’t need the HD tow package. Max weight of my pop up is 2750 or so.

My brake controller from Amazon came yesterday. Going to install it today.
