4A is great up to a certain point. It works when it detects wheel slip which by nature incurs a slight delay detecting and engaging the clutch. Its great when conditions change from dry to slick and back and forth. But in a full slippery conditions where wheel slip is 100% certain 4H shines as all wheels are driving and there wont be the rear sliding out before the front kicks in. I also presume this will make the diff clutch last longer since its 100% locked in.

Ford is weird with this. My 21 does not have a 4H setting. And yes, it has HD tow. From what I understand it's all controlled with the drive modes.

I see that with the 22's they brought back the 4H setting.

If it’s slick, use 4A. As conditions worsen, use what is says on the box. I’ve used the snow and grass modes, and they work very well. Remember that the tires you have can have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the mode you are in.

I didn’t think the non-FX4 non-HD had 4H (can’t recall what versions have it, I only have 4A). In snow mode, it looks like all 4 wheels drive in 4A.
The Mud/Rut mode drives in 4H even though the dash says 4A. There is a notation that says this in the owners manual.
