I'm guessing this has something to do with a "feature" but curious if anyone else experiences this. I have a really annoying thing that has happened for years off and on, but it seems to be almost all the time now. I'll set the stage, just about any time I do something like a 3-point u-turn, shifting from Drive into Reverse has a pretty significant delay before any torque is applied in Reverse. Specifically, you start your initial turn, hit the brakes and come to a stop before hitting the curb, shift from D to R, hit the gas, and nothing, for anywhere from 2-5 seconds.

I can only assume, that because virtually every road has a hump in the middle and gently slopes outward towards the curbs, that once you take your foot off the brake the vehicle begins to slightly roll towards the curb. This forward motion may be confusing the tranny or preventing it from allowing torque in reverse, but it's super annoying when you have cars piling up behind you in each direction while you complete your 3pt turn.

Anyone else experience this? I miss a mechanical shifter, they just always responded to what you were telling the vehicle you wanted. Do I have to power brake in reverse, lol? Guess I should have tried that before posting.

Its all In the electronic BS, its never fast, never convenient, but its what city folks want, so its in every car now. Don't expect it to respond fast, just wait for it. I hate it, and sometimes if I shift mine too soon (still rolling or whatever), the knob spins itself back to park or whatever and I'm like WTH was that for.....

May be a feature to make sure you are stopped. The biggest drive shaft / u-joint killer is going in one direction and then the other while still going in the opposite direction.
Its the equivalent to using impact on something. Super hard on the u-joints. I have destroyed a u-joint like this years ago and always come to a 100% stop before going into D or R.

I have see several complains about this over the years. Mine was super fast but started acting like yours after the PCM update. I think it gets worse when the transmission gets warm.

Kind of what I figured, it's super annoying. @LazSlate I hear ya, but being an avid off-roader for years, going from drive to reverse was a great way to get unstuck! often while the wheels are still spinning. And I destroyed a lot of things but really never ujoints, driveshafts and cv's. To me that just speaks to lousy quality, building something to the bare minimum of spec. I even had a driveshaft that was about 2" too short, leaving bare splines hanging out and it didn't break for years before I got a custom one made.

The offroad version of D to R to D is ok since your rocking the truck and shifting while rocking in the direction you are shifting to. Done that many times. Rolling in reverse and putting it in D is a sure way to twist something.
Your right about the u-joints as they stronger than most other part unless its rusted and dry. When a driveshaft twists it looks like a flimsy straw. Manufacturers seems to size things for the job and add only a little extra. Wish they would super size stuff. Not to bust on Ram Trucks but they are the worst offender, maybe that is why the price is so low.
