Hi everyone, I have tried to call the dealer about this or Google, but struggling to find any information so I thought I’d ask here. Our Expedition is a max 304a with 4x4 and tow package. We just hit 2000 miles on it. I have really babied it during the break in period, but we have gone to the lake with the boat about every weekend. This is only about 5 miles away but it does involve pulling a hill for about a mile or so where the engine is into the boost and RPMs are between 2500 - 2900. So it’s not like it’s a really heavy workload, but every single time we pull that hill we are getting a weird smell in the cabin (starts in the back where the kids notice it first) that will last 10-15 seconds then go away. At first it smelled like epoxy or something being mixed but now it just has a bit of a burning popcorn smell. We don’t get it any other time whether towing or not.

Is this just burning off some factory coatings or do we have an issue the dealer should look at? I tried calling service to talk to someone and have struggled to get a call back. Experience and opinions appreciated.

I'd take it to a dealer to look at it. That's what's warranty is for. Definitely not normal.

You could take it to the dealer but I doubt they can or will do anything unless there is a failure.

IMO it could be coatings on the exhaust or the cat getting hot. We all have smelled the rotten egg smells when someone gasses it front of us blasting super hot gas through the cats. The fact that it originates from the back and pulling a trailer which changes the aerodynamics of the air allowing it to swirl around the back. Another thing it could be is the fiber covers right over the cat area which could be getting hot. Next oil change you can look for discoloration on the fiber cover when its removed.

If it was your trans you would see a spike in the trans temp. IMO its the exhaust smell (cats or coatings)

I never found anything out about it. It is much less frequent now but still get it occasionally when I pull a long hill with the boat and have to have the RPM’s above 3.5K for a little bit. It’s sure weird.
