My mechanic told me I need to replace the steering gearbox while trying to replace my pitman arm. Apparently, the spline shaft (with the pitman arm) is moving in and out of the box at least 1/2 inch. They said it is absolutely necessary to replace the steering box before it fails. The only issue they did not understand was why it wasn't leaking. I have a bit of play on the steering wheel but that's why I wanted to replace the pitman arm. Does anyone know what would cause that shaft to move like that? the only thing that pops to my mind is the bearing, but how it could fail without immobilizing the entire box is beyond me.
Any guesses are welcome.

And you have ruled out the immediate shaft also?
Yes. Intermediate shaft is fine. Now, second issue - after changing of the Steering box, the car handles funny - as if thepower steering kick in after turning the steering wheel 1/8 of an inch. Is that normal?

ok the next question is how is all of your linkage components. Ball joints ect. If they are worn out that would also cause hesitation in your steering when turning
