If I removed the rear diff, drive shafts, and brakes from my 2007 Expy, would my rear wheels act as functioning “idlers” - or, does the rear end also act as some sort of cross-car locator for the wheels that I would be eliminating unknowingly?

Better off with rear wheel drive mechanically by a long shot. Driving on the TC only full time probably wouldn’t get you across the state. For sure not across Texas.

He wants to make a towable camper, the way I understand it. Remove axles, diffs, drive line etc and tow it

I don't think the axle shafts have anything to do with keeping the wheels on. I think you'd be fine, but not 100% sure.

Yes, towable camper is what I’m after. Just thinking through the mod and trying to get a few more sets of eyes on the ramifications. Thank you

If you look at pictures of a rear hub assembly, it looks like it's a contained unit that doesn't need the axle shaft to hold it all together. But again, I could be wrong.

@sjwelds , any issue with bolting the rear wheels directly to the bearing/hub face (as opposed to the brake rotor face), you think? Looks like my wheels would just sit inboard a hair. Less inertia should be good :)

Don't remember how that all is but I'd bet you'd be fine.
