'18 Max with tow package and similar numbers to OP: 13-ish around town (very short trips) and 19-22 highway. I also have a roof rack and often am carrying a rocketbox, which drops the highway numbers a bit.

I also tried running ECO and don't think it made a significant change. Certainly drives like a turd so I went back to normal setting.

The really depressing thing is I've been keeping track of consumption by hand and it seems the dash number is actually about 1 MPG too high :(. I was considering using the tools/utilities to correct the accuracy, but I just got new tires so I want to see if there is any change.

Why would tow package have that much MPG difference than non Max Tow??

Max tow has different gears in the differential ....higher numerical gears make the engine spin faster for a set speed...so it will use more fuel to run the same speed limit.

3.31 gears vs 3.73 will turn less rpm on the freeway by maybe 100 to 200 rpm

You gain more pulling power with the higher gears when towing due to the mechanical advantages

Does 93 octane really provide better MPG than 87? If so i need to ALWAYS runs 93. I just thought 93 burned cleaner, provided more power ..
Octane def affects MPG depending on the vehicle type, ambient conditions, altitude.
The fuel flow is always the same on all octanes but the power generated varies as the engine will detune accordingly.

My wife's Expedition (2022 303A MAX 4X4 HD Tow) and my F150 (200k mile 2013 5.0 SCREW 4X4 tuned and leveled with 285/75R17) get the same average MPG (~14.5). I too am not impressed with the Ecoboost engines. Really wish they'd offer the 5.0 in the expedition.

As an aside to my prior post on the MPG of our Max, I'm in a 4cyl Explorer while the Expy gets cam phasers replaced. Steady cruise at 70mph, it's giving an indicated 35mpg +/-3-4, saw as high as 42 while closing/drafting a semi.
Thinking an Explorer may replace my 10 year old Malibu, really liking it in the week I've had it, so far.

If I remember correctly Engineering Test Mode is the screen that allows you to adjust the mileage on the 2019’s. I’m not sure if it is the same on the later years.

I too have a 19 Limited Stealth HD tow with the 3.73. In Los Angeles, I get 12.5-14 regularly within the city and I baby it. Open highway, 18-20 mpg with maybe gains to 21 mpg in Eco Mode. I imagine people netting better mpg have the non tow package with the taller center section gearing otherwise I don't know how people are getting 22 plus mpg on the highway? Could it be 93 octane which we can't get here in CA
Getting those type of numbers too. '20 Platinum, 24K miles, HD tow, 3:73 rear. While it isn't great, I still enjoy driving it and fits my lifestyle. I have no desire to get rid of it.
