Electronic parking brake engaging on its own

I've noticed our 2018 Platinum parking brake seems to come on by itself as well but I never paid attention to exactly what the conditions were at the time. It always goes off as soon as I put the truck in gear and start applying throttle. It's never become an annoyance.

My parking brake just started engaging randomly, at about 15k miles. It has occurred 4 or 5 times now and always on flat ground. I've started to keep a log of when it engages by itself. Interestingly, the driveway on which I park is sloped significantly but the brake does not automatically engage. I engage it manually. However, after the vehicle has sat for 15 or 20 minutes, every time I open the drivers door the parking brake is heard tightening up. Anyone else hear this noise?

My parking brake has engaged twice in 2 weeks. Both times on level ground. Once in my garage and once in the level parking lot at my work. It does not disengage when put into gear and applying gas. I have to manually disengage it. This is in addition to drivers mirror thumping when resuming my memory setting. Rear taillight full of water. I think I bought a used lemon. But have always had almost no troubles with many Fords. Only 26,000 miles, one owner, special ordered Limited Max.

Any resolution to this issue? I have a 2019 Limited that has started applying the parking brake every time it’s parked and ignition is turned off.

Is there any way or setting that will allow the parking brake to be engaged once the transmission is placed in Park?

The newer RAMs have this option. Auto park brake. When set, the park brake will engage every time the gear selector is placed in Park. Not sure if the Expedition has the same.

I'm surprised at how many people (typical American) doesn't use their parking brakes and simply just leave the vehicle in park. I'd rather have the weight of the vehicle being held by the parking brake as primary and the parking pawl in the transmission as secondary.

I have a 2014 Impala 2LTZ with the electronic parking brake system.

The vehicle owner’s manual states that the car will apply the parking brake occasionally, if it is not set and used by the owner.

Have you read your vehicle owner’s manual to determine if your vehicle has the same type of feature?

My 2015 Expedition has a manually operated parking brake.

I recently had a rental Lexus SUV while my Expedition is parked at the dealer awaiting back-ordered steering gear assembly (53 days and counting today). The Lexus had an easy-to-use feature that would set the electronic parking brake when the gear selector was placed in park - and release the parking brake when the operator’s foot was on the brake pedal and the transmission shifted into gear. It was a VERY nice feature that I liked.

I have noticed that my 2018 XLT will put the parking brake on by itself occasionally - my impression was that it did it when parking on a hill, or maybe if it detects motion while going to park? No idea but it's not terribly consistent...
