I will be taking the 2022 expedition Limited Max 4WD to Tahoe soon. I was thinking of buying the snow tire chains or cables.

Any recommendation on a chain vs cable ?

Any other restrictions ? I know some vehicle manuals actually discourage the use of chain/cable.

Thanks

Your Owner's Manual probably says only cables on the rear wheels, and no cables or chains on the front wheels, due to clearance behind the tires. Totally sux... this is based on my 2018 manual but I doubt they changed it.

Agreed. Same for ‘22.
Only rear, only cables, and only as long as needed to get un stuck. Not to be driven on for long periods.

I bought these on Amazon. Went skiing a few times but luckily hadn't need to use them. I did installed them in my garage as a test and they were easy to put on. I installed the chains to the rear tires per owner's manual.

When I bought Ford had me sign not one but 2 stand alone warnings and warranty disclosures no cables or chains to be used damage not covered.

So start there.
I do Tahoe also and have a bag of z-cables they will never leave the bag.

Tires!!! The OEM tires are horrific on snow and ice nearly as bad on wet pavement. After 2 yrs of sliding all over the place I switched to BFG Trail Terrain new tire as of September 2021 specifically designed for SUV needs. Its a highway/ A/T hybrid tire with a 3 peak traction rating. Absolute game changer!!!! Very slight loss in mileage maybe .5mpg on long road trips noise is very slightly more than the OEM tires but you need to really try to notice.

Traction is day and night!!!! I can drive around all day in Tahoe on iced up compacted cruddy snow covered neighborhood streets in 2wd with zero issues. The OEM tires I was in 4H ALL the time and slid all over the place.

BFG Trail Terrain 3peak rated. Seriously total game changer!!!!

I saw Snow Socks on a Motor Trend show last year. I live in FL, so no need for snow accessories, but the socks looked easy to use, easy to store, and they worked good in the demo.

The inner fenders are a fiberglass fabric. I know for sure on my 18 expy there is not enough clearance for anything on the tire.

Agreed. I have the BFG Trail Terrains too and they’re amazing on snow and ice.

Casey’s recovery out of La Pine Oregon has been testing snow socks on his tow truck in the Eastern Oregon ice / snow. He’s pretty hard on gear and doesn’t candy coat his feedback. He has been pretty positive about the snow sock traction devices for icy hard road surfaces. Deeper snow stuff he definitely has suggested traditional chains are still better. But icy crummy road surfaces the socks seem pretty good. I’d be tempted to carry those instead of zcables if they met ODOT inspection requirements and weren’t crazy expensive.
