I am in process of getting quotes to repaint my 2001 Expy. I have some concern about rust around the windshield. On place spoke about removal and replace, the second one was not concerned. I suggested removing the weatherstrip above and around the glass. I was told it was attached with the glass. I know this is not the case for the strip on top as it is replaceble. However the strips on the sides dont seem to show up on any drawings and I am wondering if they are bonded to the glass. I would like all that rubber replaced even if the glass is not removed. Does anyone know? I have googled and checked youtubed and nothing for 1st generation.

Perhaps speak in person with a commercial glass shop that does windshield replacements?

Glass shops won’t touch it if they feel rust under the seal with a pocket knife. Expy has a reputation in this area. I’m curious what the quote was for replace. Were they talking about cutting the A pillars or just some patching?

I scoped the A pillers with an endoscope camera. A bit of surface rust on the inside but nothing big. The pinch weld is the immediate concern. Though I am sure when the glass comes out there might be more. If I am going to spend 10 or 12K on painting the vehicle I want even the pinholes fixed if any.

The notorious rust area is under the seal on top of the glass. I just assumed they need to cut out the pillars too to fix it. Maybe you can cut just up to the pillars and weld it back I don’t really know. I’m super curious what you find there tho! Poke the blade of a pocket knife under the top seal a little bit. If there’s no rust there you’re in California or Arizona.
