2020 Expedition auto Start/Stop is malfunctioning… intermittently when I release brake and transition to accelerator, the motor does not start and it displays message that must shift into park to restart engine - very untimely in traffic. Any ideas on cause/fix?

While this does not fix your problem with the Auto Start/Stop, I wonder if the Expy will restart in N like many other Auto Tranny cars? This would be better than shifting to P in traffic, as you say.

I just started experiencing this exact same issue - and you're right - I always happen to be the first one at the line when this happens during rush hour mornings. Lots of horn honks :). I did notice it really only happens in colder weather (Michigan). Perhaps a different battery for colder starts would be wise? It's a nused 2020 Expy Max with 45K miles. Just made a nice trip to and from Florida in her for a family of 5 + a dog. Was a fantastic ride!

I have a 2020 and this randomly happened to me in a drive thru a couple weeks ago. Hasn’t happened since, but I normally turn the auto start/stop off soon after getting in the car.

Whenever I get a car that has this I turn it off. The constant start stop can't be good for the engine, plus its super hard on the battery. And from what I understand, when the car starts, it squirts a fairly large amount of fuel to get the engine going, so if you're just waiting at a red light at idle the stopping of the engine doesn't really save that much fuel either.

I just had this problem multiple times before Christmas. The Expy was at the dealer for a few things before I hit 36k (2020 XLT). Battery was coming back at 450 CCA on an 800 CCA capacity battery. They replaced it under warranty. Likely a bad cell had taken out half of the battery capacity. Around the time it happened is also when things were getting colder in my area... so likely the lowered capacity and colder temperatures caused the system to fail. Like others, I had no problem shifting into park and getting it to start after the failure. It was an odd way for a battery issue to show up though...

I noticed since our last cold spell (-25C for a couple of weeks) that I was getting all the low battery symptoms (door handle unlock only working on the drivers door, no Auto Stop/Start ever, etc.) even though the weather warmed up to 0C again. Given it's a 2018 I figured it's time for a new battery. But, I put my Nautilus charger on it overnight anyway. In the morning, the charger indicated "LO" meaning it hadn't been able to get the battery up over 50%!

But, driving it the last week it appears the "smart charger" must have run a recondition overnight or something because everything is working great! I'll have to check the voltage and see what the resting value is to be sure. Maybe some of these batteries are just getting a bit sulfated or something?

Who knows, it might start acting up again in a few weeks and then I'll be buying that new battery anyway...
