Out of the blue with 105,000 miles, my 2018 Expedition Platinum 10 speed transmission is performing erratically. Sometimes it acts fine, others it is slow to shift gears, other times it clunks, and sporadically it just doesn't make a shift for about 5 seconds. It is completely untrustworthy, so I took it to a transmission shop, only to be told it must be an internal pump malfunction, but with no available parts from Ford, a new $3500 transmission will need to be installed. I find it hard to believe that a transmission that sometimes works perfectly normal, would need to be replaced. Any thoughts?

Yes, I agree with you. Since it is intermittent, I would go after the valve body. This has the shift solenoids and is known to have issues. It is around $500 but the vehicle needs to be programmed with the parameters of the new shift solenoids.

i would call few transsmition services and talk with them
try to get some pricing and then take the actions
this is a quite popular trans so thay may have some experiance

Maybe if you connect it to diagnostic computer it will show some bugs....

i would not got in total trans change and look for other solution - solenoids or other electrical part

Last year, it took 51 days to repair the transmission in my Expedition at a Ford dealer due to lack of parts.

I find it hard to believe you have been offered a new transmission for $3,500. Perhaps rebuilt?

All it takes is one transmission part to fail to ruin a transmission.

Does the transmission that is being offered for $3,500 include any warranty? Were there any transmission codes retrieved by the shop?

Seems like the part cost for a new transmission could be $2800-3100. Genuine Ford parts come with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty.

I'll take this over the $6-8k replacement cost of the ZF 8HP in my BMW.

Have you tried fresh ULV fluid change? Might be worth a shot before disassembling anything.

I had the same symptoms with my Cayenne S and put a reman valve body in it. Works like new. Messy job but at least the sump cover is metal. Not sure about the process with the ford. Do you put a new cover on?

maybe this article is relevant

Not that a 1998 Expedition and a 2018 have much in common, however, at 82,000 my transmission was abruptly slipping into 2nd. A Ford dealer back then told me it would be $3000 for a new transmission. After nursing the transmission by pulling my foot off at the shift going into 2nd I discovered a kit by Transgo and Sonnax for around $50. The kit was a replacement for the springs and valves in the accumulator valve body. After dropping the pan and pulling out some bolts anchoring the valve body and swapping out the parts and re-installing all in about an hour....yep good as new. Imagine $50....and Ford wanted to replace a perfectly good transmission. Yes, I still have that truck. It just turned 25 years old and now has 335,000 miles all on an original transmission and engine without any major mechanical work. I did change the valve body with Sonnax parts a 2nd time last year....the transmission can still kick! My advice....don't always take no for an answer.....research(google) the fix....understand what is happening....make some phone calls. Good Luck!

I bought a NEW 2018 in 2018. left the dealer and stopped for lunch with about 20 miles on the car. left lunch and the tranny was doing all kinds of strange stuff. Nursed it back to the dealer. The salesman drove it from the front of the dealership to the garage. The maintenance guy said.. Hum.. Not susposed to make that noise! Drove off with a different car.. I did not really want white.
