I have a 2013 EL Limited with 165k miles that currently runs fine. I am well aware of the potential catastrophic engine failure these 5.4 3v engines are known to have at some point. I am considering replacing the timing chain, timing chain tensioners, roller followers, and other items that could go wrong in hopes to prevent the failure from occurring. However, i have also heard once you try to do the repair it cascades into worse shape and getting the new engine is inevitable.

Is it a good idea to replace the parts preemptively or just wait until the issues arise and deal with it then and expect to likely buy a new engine?

I'd keep on with regular maintenance and when problems arise take care of it via a quality mechanic shop, don't go with the lowest bidder. The bottom ends are good for 300,000+ miles so have them do everything when it's apart and it'll be a good engine for another 100,000+ miles.

I appreciate your insight @Timo2824. I usually work on my cars myself and would probably look to do these repairs as well. Any advice on if I go about the repairs myself? Or if you had someone else do this for you how much it would likely be?

I never made the connection that if you have to replace timing components that you’ll then need a new engine. First I’ve heard of that.
@ExplorerTom I am not sure if this is case myself. I would hope that replacing the parts would sufficient and solve the issues (as it typically is). I am just looking to get some advice from others experienced with these issues on the forum and see if that does have a tendency to happen.

I haven't had these issues, my issues are basically all just gasket and seal failures on my 07, it's got 170,000 miles currently. I've done valve cover gaskets, crossover and intake gaskets, front differential seals, and oil pan gasket. If you were to ever have the timing issues I'd pull the engine and replace all the gaskets/seals and perform a cylinder leak down test. Replace the rings and hone if any cylinder fails. This will give you lots of life if the body and frame are in good shape still, plus it's way cheaper than paying 70k for a new one.

I personally would wait until you start hearing a problem, my 08 expedition has done more than 200k miles and still runs great. I intend to replace the timing chains and oil pump when I hear a lot of noise on startup, but so far she still runs great and doesn’t make any odd noises.. you might get another 100k miles before you need to do anything !! It seems to depend on how regular the servicing has been done and the quality of the oil used..

Do regular service with good oil and keep driving. I'm approaching 300K on my '08 untouched.

I have a 2010 with 5.4L Limited 2wd standard lenght with 232,000 miles. I just started to hear the timing chain on cold morning start ups. The truck has been really good to me and my family of 5. Nothing is wrong with it just age, but I do really want a new truck since my family has out grown this truck. I'm 6'5, my wife is 5'2 and I have 3 tall boy's. I hope Ford makes a Powerboost Expedition in the near future to compete with Chevy diesel trucks mpg.
