Hey all,

Quick question, as this is becoming more and more of an annoyance for me. More and more often, when I hit certain types of bumps, or even when I do something as simple as drive over the curb pulling into my driveway, i can hear a popping sound that appears to be coming from the moonroof, actually I'm about 90% sure its from the moonroof. Really it seems like anytime the chassis really flexes, i get the popping sound. I keep the moonroof itself well lubricated and cleaned, so i don't think it has anything to do with that. The only other possible thing would be the rack/rails but I can hear it inside the cabin.

I haven't taken it in yet, for this, since now I have a deductible in play, but I was just curious if anyone else has had a similar experience and if they had a fix? I can replicate pretty easily at least. But I'd like to fix it myself and not worry about a dealer, being without a vehicle for who knows how long, and paying a deductible.

Thanks in advance, and I did search for these terms and didn't find any articles that seemed to match my situation.

Thanks!

as in roof rack or the moonroof track system? i guess I should try it with the moonroof retracted and see if anything changes, i'll try that tomorrow.

Did you clean and lube around the stationary moonroof glass? It is less obvious to lube there, but it could cause noises.

My 21 does the same. I need to get it into the dealer while my factory bumper to bumper is still effective.

Thanks, that service has been done before, but the difference is, this popping noise isn't during operation, which I did have excess noise in the past during operation. This is different, it's a popping sound, seemingly as the chassis flexes while in motion. As I said, something like going over a curb one wheel at a time, or even sometimes hitting decent sized bumps in the road can cause the frame (or I assuming the frame) of the moonroof to pop. The last thing I want to do is drop the headliner (or even have a dealer do it, as they always come back with dirt and grease stains). I'll try to spend some time tightening other things and see if it makes any difference.

I just checked the six torx bolts holding the moonroof section in place, tightened them up just a tad. Climbed up on top and checked out the roof rack. The cross bars are wiggly as always but I did notice on the drivers side, the center mount seems to pop/knock a bit if I shake it back and forth or up and down. Just a quick glance tells me that center mount can only be tightened from inside by dropping the headliner, is that correct?
