Fixing to replace the spark plugs on 5.4 3 valve 2014 limited. Would it be wise to replace the coil packs too at the same time? Has 126K on it. Going with original Motorcraft spark plugs, and if I replace the coil packs should I go back factory Motorcraft or some after market ones ?

Thank you

I would only change the coil packs if defective, or if damaged when removed to change the spark plugs.

You will probably get mixed answers as most say coils are not a "wear item" so just replace one if it fails. At the very least though, replace the boots. I am about to do the same on my 2014, and I am going to do plugs, boots, and coils, with Motorcraft. For me, I'll just know I won't have to again anytime soon or ever probably.

My 08 Expy with 120k miles has the original coils and boots. Boots were not torn, ripped or dry rotted. Coils working fine. I change the plugs every 20k miles and I place a dab of dielectric grease in the tip of the boot each time.

My mechanic explained that when plugs get worn, coil packs have to work harder and may fail. He recommended changing plugs a little early. I replaced plugs at 85k.

I would not change Factory original ones this early. They often go above 200k.
Our last first gen expedition was it 226 when the first cop failed and I'd only replace two of them by the time we got rid of it at 260 k.
Always inspect the rubber boots and any that are really swelled up or cracked you should replace or you might just want to go ahead and replace all the rubber boots but the individual coils themselves should probably be left alone.
When you do get around to having one fail it's becoming a little bit more complicated now because the Motorcraft ones are probably made in China or Mexico or India and they're pricey and the ones the parts store with the lifetime warranty are no longer $39.99 like they used to be..
Just had to do one on an 04 trailblazer and the parts store wanted 70 something dollars for one. That's absurd!.
You can go to the local pick and pay salvage yard and get them for next to nothing and grab you a couple of extras while you're there and you can choose the good looking Factory original ones or you can do what I've been doing it's just buy them from eBay or amazon..
I've been using the aftermarket cops since 2008 and the shortest time I've ever had one fail was 7 years!
Of course you never know when their quality will take a dive but I've had great luck with them and they are still dirt cheap.
I ordered one for the trailblazer and I think it was $11 shipped.
On the Fords I've been buying them for under six to eight dollars a piece for a long time now and you can get a complete V8 kit for them for under 40 bucks shipped to your door.
You can even choose between several different colors. I really like the yellow and red ones and I've seen blue ones too because the black kind of gets boring and so does gray. Lol
Also, if you ever replace the whole set of them make sure you keep the other seven good ones that you take out!.
Never throw these things away!
Keep them for backups and for test purposes because once you do a set you can then get by for probably the whole life that you own the vehicle by only swapping out one of those good ones back into the car if you ever have another failure.
