Good morning, everyone

2007 5.4 V8 Ford Expedition & 2017 V6 Eco Booster Ford Expedition

I’m NOT an auto mechanic. I have done some work on every vehicle I have ever own (brakes, clutch fan, oil change, belt & filters, tune up on older ones, etc.) I do not have a lift; I used a 3-ton jack, jack stands, engine lift, and I have some tools of course. I have 1997-2014 Chilton Ford & 1997-2017 Haynes Ford repair manual. I try to do as much as I can before asking for help and or taking it to a shop. And use the dealer as the very last resort.

My 2007 Expedition is running rough, so put an auto scanner on it. I found the following codes C1095, C1288, C1440, & P0353. The first three are ABS issues. The last one P0353 is the no. 3 ignition coil failure. I have never done any of these in the past. I’m not even sure where the parts are located under the hood. The manuals don’t really show me how to fully repair them. Does anyone know of a video or other source that I can get help before turning to a shop. Is it even feasible for me to try to repair it at home by myself?

The repair should be a simple one. Each spark plug has its own coil in a round plastic housing, located directly above each plug with a small wire connector going to it. The coils are secured to the head with a bolt (10mm?). Attached to the underside of each coil is a rubber boot. A replacement coil is pressed down onto the spark plug and fastened to the head with the bolt. Then it's plugged into its connector.

Just search YouTube. Here's one video to start:

My experience says to use a genuine Ford Motorcraft replacement coil. Some people use Chinese replacements at 1/10th the price. They sometimes work, sometimes don't and sometimes work for a little while. The Ford ones work and usually last for the life of the truck.

The #3 coil is the third from the front on the passenger (right) side.

The last one P0353 is the no. 3 ignition coil failure.
Like Trainmaster said these coil packs are usually not a maintenance item. So while you have the coil pack off look for dried up coolant around the coil pack, boot and in the sparkplug well.
The reason i tell you this is because #3 coil pack (and #4) is directly under the heater hose's plastic T connectors. These connectors are famous for leaking just enough drips to kill coil pack but not enough to overheat.
The T connectors only leak when hot, so it's hard to spot. Just be sure they are good before you put new coil in and the leak ruins the new coil pack.

Pull the red tab on the coil wire and then make sure to push down on the tab. If you're me then a hot glue gun works to hold the red tab in place after you've broken off the top gray tab I was supposed to have pushed down on. Do the plugs while you're at it.

Very true what was said about coolent leaks. A few monthes back had to change 3 and 4 out for my niece. When charging I noticed the leak on the t connector which had to be changed to because of a crack. Not hard at all to do. Plenty of room. Good luck.

I would pull the #3 and check it and the coil boot first. Possibly just needs cleaning. If that coil is bad I would replace just it. No need to replace them all.

I was locating the number three ignition coil and notice there was a yellow wire almost completely cut from the number one coil. Would this effect the rough ride too?
