I'm wondering about my belt pulleys and my tensioner pulley in my 2003 expedition. How long does it take a mechanic to replace all four pulleys.
I found a video where he replaced two of them but it doesn't say how long it took him but it was very extremely easy!
Please help, I'm a disabled veteran and I need this fix cheap enough to survive this.

Belt: .3hrs
Tensioner: .5hrs
Idlers: Can't find that. I would guess .25hrs for each of the 3.

So probably 1.5 - 2 hours total. It took me about an hour to swap all of it.

For what it's worth here's what I bought from Rock Auto:
Belt: Motorcraft $26
Tensioner: Motorcraft $40
Idler smooth: Motorcraft $25ea
Idler ribbed: Litens purchased from Advanced Auto locally.

I've grown tired of replacing parts twice and the Motorcraft branded parts while not as good as factory parts still last much longer than the other aftermarket parts in many cases. For instance I replaced both smooth idler pulleys with Hayden brand and 1 failed with the other not feeling good in less than 2yrs.

Actual time to perform the job really has nothing to do with what you get charged. Nearly every auto repair shop go by what is referred to as the flat rate time, which is a pre determined cost to do any given job. If someone on here has access to flat rate costs, maybe they can post the price.

Personally, if you have a set of tools I would suggest you do it yourself as its not that hard and lead you to RockAuto.com for auto parts. You pay for shipping, but the overall savings compared to the Big stores (Oreily/Autozone/Napa) is nearly 50% or more. I only go to the Big stores if I seriously need a part in the moment. This job would take you 1-2 hrs depending on your handy skills. The only annoying part would be the fan being in the way, but you can get it done. You can save yourself a couple hundred dollars on labor and use that money for beer and fixing the car or take your partner out for dinner. I always tell my wife that "yes, it takes time, but saves money on labor and you can use that money on your stupid bags/purses." Also, you can youtube anything if you don't know how to do the job.

Tools you'll need for this job would include:
Harbor freight: belt tensioner tool, Harbor freight - belt tensioner
Any mechanic's tool set
Rockauto belt/pulleys
Belt: $9-$31
Tensioner" $20-$40
Idler Pulley: $5-$35
Tensioner Pulley: $6-$18

Wish you were in my area. You would get the parts, preferably Rockauto & Motorcraft, I would replace with free labor.
Thank You fir Your Service!!!!

This one is definitely a DIY job. I literally just did this a month ago and it took only an hour. Toughest part of the job is belt routing.
