2017 max tow independent rear. Diff just went out with 120k on it. Got it 4 months and 10k ago. Looks like the previous owner submerged in water docking his boat. (Moron) and the dealer didn't check it during thier used car certification (morons) and didn't change the fluid as soon as i bought it. (biggest moron apparently)

anyone know where i can find a junkyard diff? Dealer wants 4k to swap it out. I'm 17 hours from home but I'd much rather tow it back and do the work myself

Wow Dave that is a good source! LKQ has a ton of Rear Difs for 17 Expy. I assumed 3:31 ratio and limited the search to under 100K miles. The prices seem reasonable. There were quite a few more over 100K Mileage for less money.

I've gotten a few items from LKQ and they are generally easy to work with. I bought a used ABS pump/module from them for my '07 Expy several years ago. It failed within a few weeks and LKQ replaced it with another one for free. Minimal hassle.

Sorry to hear about this. Were there any 'symptoms' noises etc. that you noticed prior to the failure?

I have a '17 that I bought this year with 95k. Appears to have been well-kept, but who knows what the previous owner did.

thx

PS, if it was only 4 months ago, and you say the dealer 'certified' it, didn't they sell with some kind of powertrain warranty?

Perhaps just change the fluid several times in a parking lot to get majority of the water out as new oil is fairly cheap then drive home and have it cleaned and rebuilt by a local diff shop.

Get a master rebuild kit (includes all bearings and seals) and may as well get a Detroit True Trac or Locker and new gears (if needed) in there while its all out. Total cost will be less than half than a whole swap.

I had a CV shaft go out last year and I ruined the good CV shaft trying to remove it. So i removed the whole rear diff case and had a local guy rebuild it and put a True Trac in there with original gears and re-installed the unit and 2 new CV shafts. Works much better than OEM limited-slip clutch but not as good as a locker. I don't off road much and tow 6000lb trailer in summer.
