Greetings fellow Expedition owners! My 2019 XLT Expedition Max with 30K miles is currently at the dealer for service. I’m aware of the cam phaser TSB and had the “engine software” update done a couple years ago to address the concern. I’m now experiencing a 30 second engine tapping sound after cold start which eventually goes away. After watching my cold start video, the dealer states that it’s not a cam phaser problem. What could it be? Video link here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wc3Cdk1FC-XbAu7XhyHl89MpSIYUQGXI/view?usp=drivesdk
EDIT: I’ve corrected link access so all can access it now.

Thanks in Advance,

Karl

I can't access the link, but a tapping noise that goes away sounds like an oil flow issue. It could be multiple things: clogged/restricted oil passage, low oil filter flow, bad oil, bad oil pump, blown out timing chain tensioner seals, etc.

Thank you for your advice, The dealer is letting my Expy cool down until later in the day and will then try a cold start to duplicate my concern. I’m sorry that the Google Drive link did not work for you.

I couldn’t access the link, but this is probably the turbo waste gate rattle. They would rattle for 30 seconds and then stop suddenly.

Thanks, unfortunately, the video shows only after the work was accomplished. There was no pre-tear down showing the tapping sounds.

Research 3.5 phaser rattle. See if it’s the same noise. I had it with my 5.0 and now my 3.5

We had the phaser repair done on our 2018 max limited and it ran perfectly afterwards. So when the max platinum we traded it for developed a similar but slightly different sound I was familiar with the process. It had the startup rattle but also more noticeable on throttling or acceleration They did the software update but the sound persisted. My wife took it to the dealer and they dismissed her saying it was "normal."

I insisted and took to another dealership (same chain, different location) and they found it was coming from both the cam AND turbo. Both repaired under powertrain warranty. Now it's quiet on startup and sounds as it should on acceleration.

Long story short don't fall for the "it's normal for this engine" line, these things can and do run nice and quiet when fixed.

What was wrong with the turbo for them to replace it?
