I recently purchased a 2003 Expedition Eddie Bauer, 5.4. Quite the project truck, but I’ve been meticulously working through the write-ups to get her safe and reliable for an airport car.

The remaining DTCs have me stumped, figured I would ask the collective group, to maybe point me in the right direction. The codes as are as follows:

U1073 - Invalid or missing data for engine coolant from (PCM)
C1233 - Left front wheel speed sensor input signal missing
B1676 - Battery voltage out of range
C1155 - Left front wheel speed sensor input circuit failure

What I have done so far related to ABS:

- replaced the battery - it was due regardless

- replaced the left front bearing and wheel speed sensor. The left front inexplicably turned into a smoke show, so I initially thought bearing. While the wheel was in the air, the bearing tested ok with my hands at the 12 and 6 o’clock, but it was a $49 eBay special that was on there, so I went back together with Napa’s top shelf bearing and WSS.

- inspected the harness to the ABS module, and it appears sound, with no corrosion or damage at the harness connection

Not sure what to do next. I’m hoping the ABS module itself is not bad, as that’s an expensive and elusive module to source. And an expensive mistake if that’s not the problem.

The build date on the Expedition is 02/03, which happens to be THE cutoff month for several other parts I’ve had to source for the truck.

Any ideas next steps in troubleshooting? Thanks fellas!

Pete

It's drivable right ? Clear the codes and drive it a few miles see how it does. Do you have a laptop and the ForScan app ? Or a code reader that shows live data ? What's it show for engine temp ?

Thanks for the quick response Hamfisted! Yes, it is drivable. I have already cleared the codes, particularly after the wheel bearing and WSS replacement, but those same codes appeared again. I don’t yet have ForScan…my brother is a Jedi with that program, I guess I’ll have to get smart on it too. I use BlueDriver for my code reader, and it does have some live data. I’ll see if it can read the engine temp.

I did have to replace the intake manifold addressing some other write-ups. On the coolant crossover pipe, one of the options appears to have been an engine coolant temp sensor. The old manifold did not have one, and according to the Ford Maintenance Manuals, that coolant temp sensor is only on that crossover pipe on the 4v, not the 2v 5.4 I’ve got. Sound right?

Another possible related anomaly is every once in a while, I’ll get the traction control and ABS lights illuminate in the instrument cluster, with the audible tone, but it disappears as fast as it appeared. That’s happened maybe 3 times in the 500 or so miles I’ve put on the truck. Could it be a power supply issue to the ABS module?

The CHT sensor is in the driver's side head, just under the intake manifold. You can remove the alternator to get to it if need be. It was plugged in when you put the intake back in place right ? There is no temp sensor in the crossover pipe.
You can unplug the ABS harness and inspect the plug pins for corrosion, spray it out with contact cleaner.
Blue Driver will show you temps. Just have to look at live data. Have your Jedi brother setup ForScan to look at the ABS module and select the wheel speed sensors PIDs to monitor, and take the Expy for a drive. See what your wheel speed sensors are doing or if any signals are blanked.

Thank you sir! It will be Tuesday before I can get back to the truck. I’ll let you know what I see.

Update - checked the CHT, it was connected and appeared sound. After driving the truck, clearing codes and scanning again, all seems well. While I wasn’t able to check each individual WSS with my scanner, it did register vehicle speed via live data. So I will call this issue resolved. Now just have to get the cruise control working…

Glad U have fixed. Just an FYI - if it’s a 4WD drive vehicle, and the WSS light comes back on, check the 4WD actuator for that wheel also to see if it’s damage or having intermittent problems. U can easily check it with a vacuum gauge connected to the big vacuum line on the actuator. If the ring gears in the hub/actuator got damage it can send false signals to the WSS .. goodluck and I hope your problems have been resolved !!!

Thanks for the response. So far so good. All seems ok with the ABS issues. Next project, in the process of collecting all the “while I’m in there” parts for my new reman’d engine swap. That’s captured in another thread.
