I found this to be a strategy not a lack of knowledge. Lots of people bought non heavy tow pack Expeditions for way way way too much $$$$$ because it had a hitch on the back. Only to discover they got a AWD mini van with a full sized spare tire for the price of a 4x4 - heavy tow pack Expedition
That would work. Just a warning the bikes get stupidly heavy and challenging to haul as the kids get older. I was looking at hybrid style trailers I could rack bikes on also. Older kids can tent it or crash in the Expedition. Keep those ideas in the mix. Might alter your ideas
Here’s the way to think about your tow rig options.
Miles towing?
Known route?
Type if towing slow drive to the lake?
Crossing Nevada in 110 degree heat while being passed by semi’s doing 90mph then hitting Ohio and battling 35mph winds etc.
Slow haul to the lake with the 27ft sea ray and...
Go into the trailer menu. Its a little clunky. You can edit it.
My 19 is annoying because I have to go in and select No Trailer after I’m done towing or it reverts to trailer on the dash every time I go somewhere. Ford might have finally fixed that bug?
The tow mode most definitely engine...
To be honest the payload is all the stuff in it and the tongue weight. Your not going to pack 6 people, plus dogs in with say 8000lbs of trailer behind you.
I just used a buddy’s F250 to haul my 8700 lb boat up to the lake for the summer. Thats honestly the rig you go to if your hauling over...
My 19 Platinum HD is just shy of 1700 on the sticker.
The 25’s got updated rear suspension that upped the tongue weight capacity. Seems odd that the load sticker would be that low.
Aerodynamics play a huge role. My trailer can have two formats. Tall boxy mode or folded up into a low profile mode. Tall boxy mode 15mpg. Same weight in low profile mode 22mpg.
As for tow mode? I wouldn’t run standard mode for a draggy box trailer over 3000lbs. You just put unnecessary stress...
Just a follow up
New thermostat has my Expedition running 183-201 transmission temps on the highway and over a 7400ft pass.
Towing my large boat recently in heavy stop and go traffic I saw 216 and it cooled off during a decent climb at 2500 rpm cooled to 205 during the climb. Prior failing...
If the trailer isn’t shorting other vehicles? Then the truck plug likely has a short. When the trailer is plugged in it’s causing the plug on the truck side to short.
Quick update
For comparison. I just hauled my boat 8700lbs 190 miles over a 7400ft pass.
I used a buddy’s 2024 F250 6.8l 6spd.
Flat highway 55mph 205 transmission temp. Power difference was wild!!
The 6.8 revs!!! To get even remotely similar acceleration with my boat vs the Expedition the...
Quick update pulled my 8700lb boat yesterday through heavy stop and go traffic then up a respectable grade. Transmission temps peaked at 214 in the heaviest traffic and stop and go then cooled down 205 while climbing a decent hill. Prior to the thermostat replacement traffic had me running 227...
Old junk thermostat see my other posts. Redesigned thermostat fixed my strange transmission temp issues and the engine coolant temps.
Old one on the left new one on the right bag has the new part number.
Now normal transmission temps on the highway run 183-190 push it hard 200-201. Haven’t...
Left one is the old problematic one. Right one is the updated design
Package of the updated one I just had installed after fighting with my dealer to get it under warranty.
Right away 10-15 degrees cooler on transmission temps.
Just drove to the cabin not only cooler temps but under load...
Thermostat!!! Just went through this strange transmission temp issues. New thermostat has it running 183-190 on the highway. Pushing it hard in a 2000ft climb it peaked at 201 then cooled off that was with AC on. Prior to that 212-220 was happening more often as the thermostat failure got...
I have kids and haul kids all the time. Thats most definitely not something I’ve had issues with. A mug or item hitting buttons and activating diff lock or other features has occurred however.
This is a common question. Hitches are just hitches. The vehicle is the limiting factor in most cases. Even at 9000lbs the Heavy Tow version is pretty much a flat lander only hauler.
I recall a previous thread discussing this. The HO got bigger exhaust possibly different manifold? to deal with heat buildup. I think it was sorted out that the heavier cooling setup was likely also on the HO setup. I can’t recall the final bit where folks were trying to sort out parts...
If your dealer refuses to address the faulty thermostat under warranty or gives you a “daddy needs to pay his 911 4S payment” replacement cost.
Just say no thanks I’ll have a trusted shop do it at shop rates for 1hr labor and I’ll file for reimbursement with Ford. This does two things!! It...
The updated thermostat was implemented in the 22’s at some point so your good. But your temps will still be in the same range and its good to keep those in mind you might spot some kind of problem knowing whats normal vs not etc
