that could be it. make sure your switch is plugged in fully. thats the easiest thing to check. pull the cover off thats around the radio where the switch is. and check the plug. unplug it, look for any corrosion, most likely none, then plug back in. then i would check the shift motor.
theres manuals for specific models of vehicles. my moms 08 4runner has one my dads 04 tundra has one. but its harder to find. mostly because people are too lazy to work on their vehicles anymore. they dont want to learn all the electronics and vacuum lines. so they just take them in.
or falken wild peak (rocky mountain) tires. LOVE MINE! quite, great in mud, snow, sand, dirt, rocks, water, street. best all around tire i have ever had. i did all of that with 45 psi in my tires on one trip.
thats news to me. post up some picks of the engine. i want to see that. and the oil filter location. depends on if you have the relocation kit. they came with it until 99 when it was an option. for example mine is behind the bumper while some are by the pan.
they didnt change anything in the motors. the motors are the same up until 04 when they added the 3V. 97-98 have the same motors then the 99-03 have the same motors. they are the same. the haynes book works for all years. works on my 98 and nvycrmn's 01.
also there is only a small amount of room for a pusher so then it will be way less efficient. also for the spark plugs stay with motorcraft plugs. these engines are SUPER picky one which ones they like and motorcraft plugs are the best. so stick with those.

gotts mod, k&n drop in. clean MAF. good gas. NO ARCO! look for used tuners on craigslist. got my hypertech for $100. i still have my edge, just my friend is borrowing it for his f150 since it has 37s with stock gears. he needs the little extra power. haha and 3" exhaust with free flowing...
remove the hood! remove everything that is in the way you dont need. battery, intake, hoses that sort of thing. and since you've done it before you know the basics.
trailer brakes are a must. my dad once towed a 3-4k trailer with no trailer brakes, threw the mountains. on the way back from the desert there was a big down hill. did it, but the brakes were glowing red when we got back to my uncles house. haha we had to let them cool down for a few hours...
