Preparing for doing first oil change myself

Not sure if my 2020 is different, but oil change was a breeze. Put it up on ramps, regular drain plug (it’s so easy a Fumoto valve seems silly). There’s a little trough under the oil filter that will drain toward the back (on ramps/lifted at the front) or to the front of the car if it’s...

    Temp Spike On Highway Hill

Drove the family 5 hours away to the Jersey shore. Same 6 people with luggage and roof rack. Zero temp alerts on hills. Also, the tranny temp was sitting at 189-190*. Never went above 190*, and it did not fluctuate with acceleration/deceleration as it did with the old t stat. I think the old...

    Temp Spike On Highway Hill

Good to know, but my temps were spiking at constant speed going up hills. Not the driving you describe. I did the heat on full and rechecked the coolant level. All seems good. I have not seen the rad fans come on with it idling (a/c off of course), even letting it sit for 5-10 mins after...

    Temp Spike On Highway Hill

Got the new t stat in today. Could not for the life of my find the petcock on the rad, so I just let all the coolant come out when I pulled the t stat. Made sure to install the new with the jiggle valve at the top, which is how the original was. Original is actually a 195*, part no...

    Temp Spike On Highway Hill

Did not get a chance to install the new t stat before the camping trip with the rain. Driving up to the campground, me and three middle schoolers in the car with gear and towing a 10’ box pop up trailer, I was watching the temps. It’s a 70 mile trip, so 1 1/2 hours. Kept speed around 70-75...

Trans fluid change that won't end..... Rant alert

Hmm. About to change my tranny fluid, and I watched the Ford Tech Makuloco video on it. He says the gasket is totally reusable, lasts the life of the tranny. Sure it’s not the cooler seals? Those he said need to be replaced.

    Temp Spike On Highway Hill

New 180* t stat should be coming today. Next Wednesday I tow my smaller pop up camper up north for a trip. I’ll monitor the trans temp since I don’t have the numerical display of coolant temp above the bar.

    Temp Spike On Highway Hill

I forgot to add that I checked the trans temp when I saw the near-overheat happen, and the tranny was at 210*, which seems normal, and indicates to me that I wasn’t working the truck too hard.

    Temp Spike On Highway Hill

Yes, I understand that the thermostat doesn’t cool the engine; rather it guarantees a minimum temperature. I ordered a 180* t stat. So cooling starts ten degrees lower than specified. Unless my t stat was sticking, there’s zero reason for my coolant temps to be approaching 240* under the...

    Temp Spike On Highway Hill

Seems like the 1251 opens at 190*, and the 1258 opens at 180*. 1258 it is, I guess. Or do I want a 170* tstat?

    Temp Spike On Highway Hill

I just completed a 2500 mile road trip in my 2020 limited Max, first one in this truck I bought used last summer with 65k miles. On the last leg of the way home, a 9-hour drive, I noticed that on a few long uphill sections of the highway (NYS Thruway, so nothing crazy), at 80 mph or so, the...

GFB Blow Off Valve First Impressions

Isn’t the stock set up a diverter valve that vents the excess boost back to the pre-turbo side of the intake? That air was measured by the MAF and it the ECU is expecting it to be there. Replacing with a BOV that dumps the air to atmosphere instead will result in a (momentary) rich condition...

    Transmission

I also get a long pause before engagement when shifting from D to R or vice versa. Doesn't seem to happen all the time, though.

    Gorilla Lug Nuts Fit

Went to do brakes on the wife's minivan (VW-badged Chrysler). Her lugs were all sorts of messed up; look to be the same 2-piece design. What crap.

2019 expy Which valvetrain side is Bank 2?

Different manufacturers label the cylinders differently. Some are odd all in one bank, some do as Ford and each bank is sequential.

    Headlights question

Those projectors were designed for halogen bulbs, not LEDs. Try a pair of HIR halogen bulbs. They are brighter than normal ones, and are pretty cheap. I put them in mine, and theres a noticeable difference, though not huge improvement. But at least the warm color temp doesn’t get washed out in...

    Headlights question

LED light output pattern doesn’t match that of halogen, so you’ll never get great results putting them in halogen housings. Also, LEDs are notorious for performing poorly in projectors that aren’t designed for them. At least having projectors, you’re not blinding oncoming traffic like the...

    Headlights question

Are these factory LED lights, or did you take out halogen bulbs and replace with aftermarket LEDs?

Solution: Front bumper license plate holder came off (dealer drilled too big of holes, so recommend 3/16 exploding rivet)

I do like plastic hardware for license plates. Steel screws into aluminum sitting undisturbed for years is a recipe disaster when the time comes to remove them.

    Headlights question

are you talking about drop-in LEDs in halogen projectors?

    When to replace brakes

You don't always get what you pay for, but you DO pay for what you get... Totally agree on pricing at FLAPS these days. It's gotten out of hand.

Front Brake Pad Replacement - Gen4

Good write-up. One suggestion—if you use the C-clamp on the caliper to compress the piston a bit after you remove the wheel, it’ll pop right off after you remove the slide pins. No need to pry/fight.

    JLT Catch Can

I installed a JLT catch can a few weeks ago. Pretty easy, uneventful install. This past weekend I took my first longer drive with the can, 450 miles from Albany to Montreal and back. I checked the can when we returned out of curiosity, and I was a little surprised to find a bit of oily, sludgy...
