best case scenario is you have a starting system problem- starter battery solenoid... I would think you would of heard some noises or somthing if the eng let go before you shut it off.

I woud go with a flareless fitting splice. they work great. if you can find the line it usually comes as a set and is very pricey. YOu could also cut the line and slightly flare the ends and use a quality hose and clamps also.
sounds to me like the awd is engaging due to a speed difference between the front and rear axles. this could be tire size/wear issue or a speed sensor problem.
I would change it. A "flush" is fine just make sure they do not use a cleaner first- just exchange the old for new mercon v. A pan drain and filter replacement is fine also just remember to drain the convertor also.

does the odometer read numbers or just dashes? if it reads dashes ck the wiring harness in the lf wheel well especially if you have oversize tires as they can get rubbed through and short out at times.
Keep it! the newer ones are nice but a lot more problems. The dealer wont give you anything for the 98. I would buy something newer if you want but keep the 98.
