    Are bilsteins really worth it?

If it matters, KYB in the day was my second choice (to Bilsteins). KYB used to also make a very good shock.

Best oil to use in 2019 Expedition

If you wish to humor yourself read the following post. https://www.expeditionforum.com/threads/oil-analysis-as-a-predictor-for-cam-phaser-timing-chain-cam-follower-issues.37958/page-10#post-350337 In a nutshell, Synthetic oils exceed manufacturer's recommended oil changes with a good bit of...

Best 18” tire for ride quality?

When you say rear seat - are you speaking to the 3rd row? I've owned several large 3 row vehicles - in all instances regardless of the ride smoothness, for some reason the rear of the car appears to move around and is felt more than the middle row and front row (smooth and quiet). This...

Best oil to use in 2019 Expedition

I run 15K intervals and have to add maybe 2/3rds of a quart at 10K. It then runs the distance. I'm at 80K miles currently. I use Mobile 1 5W-30 on my 2012. Analysis has showed good results.

    Strut Replacement Recommendations

For my 2012 (yours is a 2016, yes?) the Bilsteins were the 4600 B6. It was quite some time ago but as I recall where the opening center hole is punched up in the control arm, I couldn't quite get it over the ridge. A small drop in ridge height at the outer lip and they went right in. The...

The capacity of the EL always amuses me

I guess the only good thing about this bubbling (oxidation) is that it's aluminum and at a glance does not have the same material loss rate nor quantity as iron products (good 'ol fashioned rust).

    Strut Replacement Recommendations

I have a 2012 EL XLT with 76K miles and haven't looked in a while at the rears - maybe should. I did the fronts some time ago as with you junk from the factory but Ford refused to replace them under warranty. I put in Bilsteins. I've very pleased with them, however they get mixed reviews in...

The capacity of the EL always amuses me

My wife and I frequently remark at how huge and comfy our '12 EL XLT is. We have 3 adult kids and 3 grand-kids and sometimes our offspring borrow this vehicle to take trips with their 2 kids and 2 dogs. We've move furniture up North for 3 families when my dad passed in '16 - it was packed full...

    rear view camera

You may be able to call call Ford Customer service, have them run the VIN number and they can possibly tell you what came standard. I think you are mistaken on what was standard on the Eddie Bauer edition. I just did a simple search and it looks like even with the Eddie Bauer edition, the...

    Are bilsteins really worth it?

I hope I'm not too late for the party. We have a 2012 EL XLT now with 70+K miles on it. I swapped to Bilsteins up front in August of 2014 right at warranty end where Ford wouldn't do squat about the leaks. The rears are OEM Ford. At the same time I changed the front shocks, I dialed in the...

    rear view camera

I have a '12 and looked into this since I only had the EL XLT. Oftimes cars are wired for all the options even if the hardware was not part of that car. I have just finished installing a rear camera in my car and the rear hatch inside lower trim has not yet been reinstalled. I just went out...

    Oil and Filter time...

You are correct. All of today's oils are outstanding and last well within the manufacturer's recommendation. Some of us, however use the synthetics for a variety of reasons - one of the big ones for me is race track driving. I have driven all of my performance cars on race tracks, and stock...

    Oil and Filter time...

For quite some time back in the day I tried to find the basis for annual changes. I could conclude absolutely no valid technical reason (considering modern synthetics). I believe it originated in the day (with the 3,000 mile change interval mandate) as a result of condensation in the oil. I...

The 5.4L 3-valve "mileage vs symptoms" thread!

2012 EL XLT 77.5K miles. Front shocks leaked just out of warranty, replaced with Bilsteins. 1 Battery, 1 set of tires. Paint bubbling rear door adjacent handle chrome tim. Tow/haul switch plastic failed and replaced. No oil startup rattles yet.

In South Florida we don't worry about the 12 month tradition - it never gets cold enough here!

    Oil and Filter time...

Chuck S - per the report 11 months. As a point of reference most is in town driving with 1 or 2 1450 mile trips thrown in each year. I also tow a 7000# boat/trailer locally which also gets one 500 mile trip in the Florida summer each year as well.

What tires are you guys running?

Firestone Destination LE2 - my buddy is in the business, for trucks of our size he really endorses this tire. Excellent in wet, dry, smooth, quiet. I'm very pleased.

Oil analysis as a predictor for cam phaser/timing chain/cam/follower issues?

My replacement oil (much to my Chagrin) to the sample posted above was Mobil Super Synthetic vs. the prior Mobil 1. I say chagrin because the difference between the oils is as clear as mud, I ended up with the oil as a horse swap with my son who didn't clearly read the label on the gallons...

    Oil and Filter time...

I share this for those of you that can be open minded on breaking from established paradigms... My oil analysis came back fine at 8640 miles using synthetic. This is following the last time I changed at over 15K miles as seen towards the end of the following post...

    Strange oil situation

I agree on the drain back. First I've heard of one happening - good catch. I would love to hear the dialogue when you return the defective filter for a refund. BTW - mobile would like to know - especially any manufacturing data on the box or filter.

    2011 Expy Spare Tire Question

you can thank the bean counters for this. It is stupid. In answer to the fit question, you'll note that your spare has a different size. The overall diamater will likely be very close or your traction control would go nuts. MrSticker - what you ask is exactly what I did.

What is this thing on the bottom of my vehicle

NVH - one of the many things they learned over the years. I would guess this is more for the V word, since there's alot of thermal expansion and other things going on with exhaust. It likely dampens out some of the potential resonant frequencies that may be problematic.

    Drivers turbo replacement...116,000 mile report.

Has anyone read the coverage of the 'lifetime powertrain warranty' and what parts that covers? I think you'll be quite dismayed. Years ago all the US manufacturers significantly watered down their 'powertrain' definition. Scope of parts covered is disappointing IMHO.

Oil analysis as a predictor for cam phaser/timing chain/cam/follower issues?

You are right on target Idahokid. I'll be sampling every 5K going forward at least for one more run. I just want to make sure my metal numbers are drain interval based, vs. wear based. Unfortunately I've concluded that the gasket failure may be the main initiator, and start-up clatter is...

Oil analysis as a predictor for cam phaser/timing chain/cam/follower issues?

Andy - in addition to Jeff's comment, if you're under warranty this analysis should stand on it's own merit for the local dealership to engage in dialogue with Ford Corporate for thoughts on what to do. It is not normal, they should be tickled pink their customer is funding his own analysis of...
