We full timed in a 34’ airstream for a while with two toddlers and found that was much more space than we needed. We didn’t even use all the storage space inside the trailer.
We have now bought a Springdale 251bh for 1-2 month trips and will be taking our first one this summer.
I think you’d...
Thanks for the detailed responses. I did get the car driven a couple times over the 5 weeks we were away.
I’ve probably been changing my oil more often than I should but I want this car to get to 400,000 miles like some of the owners who bought in the early 2000s!
It’s so tough to ascertain differences between these top oil brands, I find.
After reading many comparisons it seems that most people choose Mobil1 but it’s unclear why.
I found when using regular Mobil1, I burned oil badly while towing but do not burn any with the Truck and SUV type so I...
I was in Mexico for part of the winter so my 2019 Platinum Expedition has only been driven 2400 miles since my last oil change.
No towing but mostly cold weather short trips since I changed it at the end of November.
I use Mobil1 Truck & SUV which says it’s good for 1 year between oil...
We had a 34' airstream (in my profile picture), about 10,000 lbs loaded with full tanks but I never weighed it. We're picking up a Keystone Springdale 251BH which will be lighter and under 30' but we've never had any issues with the suspension. The Expedition is a great tow vehicle!
You’d be fine. The towing and payload numbers on these vehicles are extremely conservative and the expedition is about the best tow vehicle you can get. We’ve towed over both limits all across the continent.
It makes a substantial difference in ride softness and the city fuel economy improves. Highway fuel economy will worsen and the car isn’t as planted as with the 22s. I use 18s for the winter and 22s for summer.
Our airstream was about 10,000 lbs fully loaded and 34’ long. You can see it in my profile picture.
We’ve sold it now and are looking for something smaller in the sub 30’ category.
Here are our summer and winter setups. I love the look of black rims but can’t bring myself to replace the 22s it came with that we use for summer tires.
Mine works almost exclusively when i don’t want it to like when hitching up a trailer. I was excited about that feature too but I’m afraid you’re not missing much.
I like the Mobil1 Truck and SUV for towing. When towing our 10,000 lb airstream, the expedition would burn some oil on regular mobil1 but never with the truck and suv. Full synthetic gives me peace of mind
When I switch to my 18" winter wheels from the 22" summers that came with my '19 expedition platinum, I get a noticeable increase in "peppiness" because of the lighter wheels and smoothness in the ride because the higher sidewall of the tire makes the potholes less noticeable. That could be the...
I recommend considering the Max even if you don’t think you’ll need the extra trunk space. The Max can fit a sheet of plywood or drywall in the back with both rows folded down, and the larger gas tank size is nice too.
I haven't swapped the factory summer tires yet but I'm eying the Michelin Defenders when I do. A small sidewall (so 20" or 22" wheels) is ideal for stability.
I tinted the windows all the way around including both windshields. I put 90% on the front which looks clear but helps with heat reduction. It makes a massive difference and nano ceramic tint is a MUST. There’s no point in using carbon tint.
35% on the front (to keep the cops happy), 25% on...
It feels like a real event to take the expedition out to the grocery store and my wife dislikes it. I sometimes wish we had a second, small car for daily driving trips but it’s not worth the expense for us and it wouldn’t be worth sacrificing the awesome cargo space in the Expy for when we have...
This is very detailed but it would be nice if it included a video for help with maintenance I'm planning but have never done on any vehicle like replacing brake pads and spark plugs. They're too crucial to risk messing up, unlike replacing something more simple like an air filter.
Thanks. Napa auto parts’ website insists this won’t fit the expedition so I’ll ask a mechanic here before trying the install. I e never done spark plugs before.
I’m also interested in getting the part number. I don’t know anything to big about spark plugs but would like to try to change mine for the first time.
I have 46,000kms and still on the original plugs.
It's the best road tripping car I can imagine. Extremely comfortable, tons of storage space, it can tow a huge amount, and relatively fuel efficient. I recommend getting a rubber mat to sit in the trunk that fits when the third bench is folded down. It'll make cleanup easier and keep everything...
