It's hard to describe a sound with words and I don't think this forum allows video attachments so here's a YT link.

Going into gear, my 1999 5.4 has been making a grinding noise that I couldn't ignore any longer. After researching for a while through the usual sources, my...
Answering my own now-obvious question, this is OBD2 Mode $06 data. How to interpret it can be found in enormous detail at: https://www.motorcraftservice.com/FreeResources/OBD
Yes, same on my 1999 Exp liftgate and 2005 F150 rear doors. Never had a bad cable, just crumbled plastic on both ends. When installing, I make sure the slot in the end piece is rotated away from the opening it's being snapped into.
My scanner's on-board monitoring report is formatted like this. OBD2 was young in 1999 so is this info even relevant? If so, where can I match the numbers to a name?
Re: the P030x codes, my Exp and F150 have thrown several of those over the years accompanied by running horribly. Maybe I've just been lucky but a new ignition coil has always fixed the problem. It did take a couple of repeats on the same cylinders to teach me never to use aftermarket coils.
Interesting about the incline. Never noticed that, possibly because most places I park are more or less flat. What were the symptoms of the controller failures?
Ran into the same problem when restoring my '99; incandescence is so passé. Had to settle on this plug-compatible one and it's been fine so far.

If you don't have air shocks then this is definitely not the problem! However, every symptom you've described fits with how the air suspension operates and sounds.
Attached is a picture of mine. If yours doesn't have a compressor in the same spot, I'll bow out of the conversation because that's...
Assuming you have air shocks, could the noise be coming from the air suspension compressor?
Your description is kinda what mine sounded like until (thanks to this forum), I replaced the vibration isolator bushings. There was nothing wrong with the compressor but the bushings were toast and...
It's 3+ months since I did the engine bay, running boards, window seals, etc. and they still look fresh. Which is amazing to me, considering what they looked like before and how little expertise I brought to the task.
Thanks @macbox, the engine bay was the last item on my list. I'm still amazed at how well it turned out relative to the effort and skill required. So much so that I posted a thread about it:

For reasons that don't need to be discussed, I used the wrong color Motorcraft touch-up kit. Other than having someone else do it, what are my options to make this look better?
Same company but this product is a coating vs. coloring agent.

While renewing my 1999, I also applied it to the running boards and some other exterior trim with satisfying results. It's the only plastic trim restorer I've tried that...
In 2016, because of the clunking, I replaced the worn-out lower ball joints on my 1999 with the Moog equivalent(+Zerk). No issues since so it's thumbs-up from my experience.
Thanks for the input. I have no welding skills but this sounds like a relatively minor job for someone who does. And that has led to an unanticipated problem - finding a welder. There's plenty of body shops around but they aren't interested in non-insurance, small dollar jobs like this and I...
Hi, I'd like to properly introduce myself to the forum and maybe participate in some of the discussions. A decade or so ago, for economic reasons, I began maintaining my 1999 Expedition EB 5.4 and my wife's 2005 F-150 FX4 5.4. There were a lot of things I didn't know but I can say now that...
Hamfisted, thanks for the quick reply. I'm the second owner, got it in 2003. First noticed the crack a few days ago and it definitely wasn't there two weeks ago. I'll try to book a welder tomorrow.
A few days ago, I noticed what looks like a stress crack where the left liftgate strut attaches to the body. I would appreciate a response from anyone who knows what it means and what to do about it. Is it cosmetic or structural? Can I ignore it or do I need to panic?
My 1999 EB 5.4 is burning a lot of oil and starting to run rough and I'm wondering if it's worth putting any more money into it. Wondering because I don't really know what I'm looking at other than heavy oil residue around the valve covers and other nearby locations. The entire area behind the...
