    Rough Idle Code P0016

So no answers but am having the same issues, when cold engine is fine, as it warms up the idle gets rough, absolutely fine when driving. Idle when warm gets worse as engine is loaded, i.e. AC on, always smooth when out of gear. I would say it is better for a period after a long run, e.g. if...

Photo of brake vacuum line routing to intake manifold

Car is a 2008 5.4 Expedition, am looking for help re the routing of vacuum line that runs between the base, at the rear, of the inlet manifold and the brake booster. Specifically at the back of the driver's side valve cover does the vacuum line pass between the harness and the cover/rear of...

Low Compression on Cylinders 2 and 4

Carl, I've a few things to share but no answers... (i) $10-$12k sounds expensive for an engine, last time I looked a refurbished engine was less than $5k, $8k with labour is what I'd expect. (ii) How low is very low compression? See this thread for my experience, I'm left believing...

What kind of ignition key do I need?

I too have an 08 and the key has S not SA, I made two separate purchases from Amazon in both listings they said "40 bit" but on the packaging said 80 bit. Read through comments and someone posted that the 80 bit was backward compatible with the 40. It's also widely reported on the web that...

Looking for advice on low compression

Thank you, below what was replaced with some additional notes... (i) On the valve train, the exhaust valves on cylinders 3 and 4 - they had more buildup than the rest but don't think it was needed, the inlet and exhaust springs on cylinders 3 and 4, again doubt it would make a difference but...

Looking for advice on low compression

Finally got around to reassembling the car and it's back running again. I'll try to keep this brief, ended up removing the passenger side head, but never found a clear cause for the low compression, quite a few of the lifters were bad and I did lap the valves but nothing obvious. Reinstalled...

    Timing chain - bare minimum?

This has been my experience, plus a few unrequested questions/comments. You're in an unusual situation, making some risky choices on what to fix to get it to a level where you're comfortable and able to sell the car; it's much easier to do a full job and fix it properly. So first question is...

Looking for advice on low compression

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this... First off, some time ago I reported that cylinders 3 and 4 showed zero leak off pressure, well that was because there was an extra Schrader valve in the line and no pressure was getting to the cylinder - DUH! With that taken care of I got the...

Looking for advice on low compression

Re the hoses. There is more to this story than I let on. The dealer claimed to have replaced plugs, coil packs and hoses when troubleshooting the car only to say there was a compression issue, I really doubt they did replace those parts but that's a different story. I'm familiar with the hose...

Looking for advice on low compression

Re CEL codes, I didn't say but since getting the car home I've removed the parts to get the valve covers off, so lots of wiring is disconnect. When I connect the scanner, it's really basic, it tells me a bunch of things about throttle pedal position circuit low, throttle actuator control motor...

Looking for advice on low compression

I've a basic OBII scanner and will try to read the codes, the misfire happened when the car was out of town, my wife stopped at a nearby Ford garage.

Looking for advice on low compression

Car in question is a 2008 5.4 3V Expedition, it had a misfire, garage said it had zero compression on cylinder 5, I figured it wasn't worth replacing the engine so decided to bring it home and take a look myself. Performed compression test (cyl/press) 1/180, 2/200, 3/120, 4/150, 5/210, 6/210...

Compression tester for 2008 on 12mm plugs

Well to answer my own question, Amazon got the OTC part in and I ordered it form them. What with the base kit and the special adapter it works out to $120 worth of compression tested but that's not even a tank of gas so... Peter

Compression tester for 2008 on 12mm plugs

I'm trying to do a compression test on a 2008 Expedition, it has the later 12mm plugs. There are a number of tester kits that include an adapter which they state is for the 3V Triton engine but the ones I've seen are for the earlier 14mm plug thread. OTC makes specific adapters for the earlier...

    Replacing Body Mounts

Vehicle is a 2008 EL Eddie Bauer, 200 k miles. This is a straight forward job, just a couple of notes to add to what's on YouTube and in the forum. There are five mounts per side, I numbered them #1 through #5 with #1 in front of the front wheel, #2, #3 and #4 between the wheels and #5 at the...

DIY - Differential Pinion Seal Replacement

There are a few YouTube videos on this job, however I wanted to share the "other" things I ran across that might make the job smoother for the next guy... i - You'll only need the oil with the friction modifier if you have a limited slip diff, the regular is a few dollars cheaper. ii - If...

    Replace rear LCA ball joints

I used the floor jack to help position push the LCA back into position and to compress the strut so the bolts could be inserted. With the ball joint stud torqued (I wasn't able to find what the torque should be but it took around 90 ft lbs to loosen) and the two bolts (hinge and bottom of...

    Replace rear LCA ball joints

Press out the old ball joint, press in the new - make sure it's fully seated before replacing the circlip, I don't know how important it is but the tabs on the clip were facing out, the clip is big so regular needle nosed pliers worked to remove it. Control arm with new ball joint, ready...

    Replace rear LCA ball joints

Hi, This forum has helped me with a number of issues so I figured time to give a little back. if anyone has definitive torque values I'd appreciate it. Car in question is a 2008 EL with 175kmiles, the symptoms are some shaking at speed and doesn't track well on poor road surfaces, wheels are...

    Photo of timing chain guides

Thanks for the reply, you're probably right. For sure it made some awful sounds on start up and there were some pretty deep gouges in the timing cover. The tensioners have both spring and hydraulic biasing, maybe the springs grew weak over time.
