My upper ball joints were bad and I only felt them wiggle at low speeds. That don't mean they don't wiggle at high speeds. It just means it may not be noticable because of all the other vibrations from road conditions, etc. In 4wd, maybe the axles are putting it in a bind and keeping enough...
I tow a rockcrawler with mine. It has the 5.4 and 3.32:1 gear ratio and it does ok. I think it would benefit more from a 3.55 or 3.73 gear out back but I can't complain as it is. Trailer and crawler weighs around 4k-4500 lbs if I had to guess.
