Yep. Just noticed it. Definitely sounds like either IWE solenoid and/or actuator and/or the IWE’s themselves.
Are the IWE’s on these built into the hubs or are they separate parts that can be replaced?
Holding my breath because if you do one thing then you might as well do a bunch of other...
She’s got 245,***. Rebuilt the diff. It’s great again. I’ve maintained and repaired everything along the way w open checkbook.
I retired the truck, sleeps in garage and runs once or twice a week to tow a 20 ft Sea Ray w a v8 3500lbs. Does the job easily.
I don’t think I would put more into her...
At 245,*** I drove from central Florida to northern Wisconsin and towed a 3200lb boat back. Left Florida on Monday got back Friday.
Truck flawless. Ran as high as 75mph on certain stretches of smooth pavement.
Damn truck will live forever.
240,***. Almost all highway. Maintenance w open checkbook. Rocker panel rust spots.
Original paint finish is great. No tears interior.
Interesting market for used nowadays.
The knowledge here has helped me a lot. Lots of varying opinions and perspectives on these ole gals.
As I sit here after just rebuilding the rear diff and a whole host of other repairs I lean on the experience of the folks here to decide when to call it quits on this old truck.
Best wishes...
9.75 ring gear 3.55 LSD needs repair. Truck has lots of new parts runs strong and I need to keep as tow rig. I will semi retire it after this repair.
Truck has 240,*** miles.
Recommendations?
Beats me but hearing a little more diff noise after 30mph up to 75mph and increases on deceleration.
Can’t tell if coming from front or rear.
Front diff oil fresh. Rear diff oil old. Don’t want to make assumptions.
This year just did
4 cats plus pipes
Alternator
Starter
Battery
Front brakes
Now it’s the F’king upper control arms and one lower ball joint.
All the brands suck.
Ive got OE Motorcraft ball joints lasted 2 friggin years
The uppers are currently Moog.
The front shocks are weeping and those are...
Considering upping 1-2 given the coil over gave me 1 1/2 inch lift or so and I want aluminum wheels bs OE steel on now.
But all I do o drive highway so I’ll want to stick to a touring or all season high mileage tire.
How would my truck change on the highway by going +1 or +2 in size?
My brake pads are signaling so I’m considering Duralast ceramic pads and rotors from Autozone.
I don’t like the dust of OE that I have on now.
Any recommendations? Only fronts are needed.
My driving style is almost all highway so stops are from high speeds.
Thank you.
Sooooo...turns out that rattling wasn’t coming from under the hood and the ac compressor.
The rattle is from both sides inside the cats.
Ordered a set of Walkers Direct Fit for both sides all 4 and pipe.
This ole gal owes me a few favors.
What is your guess the price is to have following job done.
Front diff oil
Rear diff oil
Transfer case oil
Tranny flush (not drain n fill)
Coolant flush.
So I need to tow a boat from Lake Erie to central Florida. My rig is 2000 EB 4x4 in excellent condition.
Boat, motor, trailer +/- 5000lbs on tandem axle w surge brakes.
I’m thinking of doing another tranny and coolant flush before.
Tires good. Brakes good. Spare tire not so good. A/C...
Every once on a while, not always, turning the wheel all the way to park or back out of a parking space I hear and I think feel that pop sound. Wonder what that could be??
Also, I check my oil level and color constantly. This week from Tuesday till today I’ve driven over 600 miles all highway...
This is for my wife’s 2016 EXPLORER. It’s a front wheel drive base model w normally aspirated V6 engine.
As it sits it tows 1500lbs but we’ve never used it for towing since I have the old 1st gen Expy.
If I add a transmission cooler and hitch is that all I need to increase towing capacity...
Rode in one of my colleagues 2020 F150 w the 3.5 EB today.
Daaamn. We were doing 85 and could hardly tell. I think he was at 1800 rpms. Has the 10-spd tranny.
That damn truck is saweet. It’s a battleship grey, 3” lift, XLT w heated seats, big screen nav, beautiful black something or other type...
With 100k or around there plus or minus 10-15k miles?
We’re talkin 5.4 3v here now.
I like the looks and the prices I’m seeing.
Would a CarShield or similar warrant this vintage?
Mine is looking ratty and am getting ready to change it and front transfer case oil.
I’m thinking of either an OE diff cover or something like this:

Also, what...
Finally got a quality wheel balancing after 3 tries at different shops.
Big improvement at 75mph. They did say these old steels get difficult to balance perfectly due to wear. They recommend aluminum wheels, easier to repair and balance.
What OEM’s made of aluminum would be a direct fitment...
Your oil faster? I drive between 75-80mph for hours at a time every day. I keep a close eye on my oil level keeping it at or just below the top dot on the dip stick. I change the oil w synthetic every 3500-4000 miles.
Should I be changing it sooner given the high speed driving?
...last a minimum of 10 years from date of purchase.
Run 25k-30k miles per year
90% highway driving minimum
Don’t care about fuel economy
Rarely tow but will need to tow 5000lbs 300 miles 3-4x year.
Can be used or new but limited to $35k budget.
Must have very good reliability and...
