Is Ford Doing Anything About Their Paint Issues?

I'm surprised engineers didn't address the causes of galvanic corrosion a long time ago. My 12 is blistering like a 1950 Chevy in upstate New York. It bugs me, but clearly there is no good solution. Aftermarket paint is just never going to be as good as factory paint, so repair is not final.

    2015-2017 Gear ratios and towing

I intentionally bought mine with the load leveling, anti-sway suspension. Without that, you won't be happy with an 8200 pound trailer. I'd suggest you probably won't be happy anyway as it's awfully close to the limit of design.

Help me choose a used Expedition for towing

It's that wacky stuff called physics and engineering. If you choose to ignore science that's great, but I can guarantee you can't change physical reality. Good luck with your "theory".

    Replacement tires

The Michelin LTX M/S2 M+S series have worked well for me. I got mine through Sears for a lot less than the Rire Tack price. I think they're also available in Ford Quick Lanes. I drive in the snow quite a bit and have found these stable, quiet and reliable.

Help me choose a used Expedition for towing

I'm on my second. My '99 went almost a quarter million miles. My '12 has just over 100K. Both came equipped with load-leveling suspension. It really makes a difference for towing and makes highway driving smoother, too. I'd look for a rig with the 5.4L Triton V8 instead of a twin turbo...

Green cluster lights --- alas, we're stuck with em

It's a shame there was apparently no project manager during design who might have recognized that mixing 1970's LEDs with digital with analog made for a confusing mess.

Maintenance questions on just purchased '12 Expedition w/ 102k miles

Same rig I drive. I have 92,000 on mine and it feels like it's just getting broken in. The big service is the 95,000 mile tune up, which includes plugs and solenoids. Make sure that was done as scheduled. I'd bet someone who sold at 102K didn't do that service. As for the dash LEDs, the...

    Leather Care

One precautionary note ... if you have heated and/or cooled seats, do not over apply any treatment to prevent plugging the holes that distribute the cooled/heated air.

Just saw an advertisement for a barebones F150 XL... for 40 grand before fees and taxes

For my money, I want a V8 ... I'm just not excited about twin turbo added compression in a motor spinning twice as fast. Physics says this combination won't hold up as long, no matter what the advertisements tell us! However, the idea of a 2018 Expy Platinum Max for a mere $75K makes me...

    Triton V8 or Ecoboost V6?

I loved the 200+K I got from my first 5.4. I tow a lot and can't imagine that the higher compression and higher RPMs of the Ecoboost will make it last longer than a V8, so I snagged another 5.4 when it was time for a new rig. I'm at 85K and still loving my choice.

Sync 3 problems on warmer days

I think the bottom line here is that Sync doesn't get updated regularly and Ford wants a prohibitive amount of money for an upgrade, so it isn't going to happen. Contrast that with your phone, which comes with an operating system. You pay for and expect regular system updates to the phone...

Sync 3 problems on warmer days

That sounds frustrating. Never have experienced anything like that with my Android phone. Seems like there are two solutions. OK, shoot me, I'm being an imp ... move to a cooler place or get a different phone. ;)

Just got my 1st look at the 2.7 ecoboost...

I think the missing part of this discussion is the compression in the engine ... if a normally aspirated engine has 100 psi and a twin-turbo has 160 psi, I'm guessing the lower pressure engine lasts longer.

    S**t motors

Indeed, the newer 3 valve version also has much deeper threading on the plugs ... if I were to replace the motor in a '99 because of concern over the plugs, I'd look for a newer Triton.

How good are our Expy's? Not too shabby compared to.....

Of course, if there are more examples of a model on the road, the proportion of complaints might also be proportionally higher. Overall, I've got over 300,000 miles on two expys without a significant problem due to design or manufacture. All my problems have been human caused.

    Rear view camera misaligned?

I find the lines really helpful for lining up the trailer. The zoom-mode without the lines makes it harder to close in ... but there's still some approximation since the camera is at an angle to the objects viewed. I want a siren and flashing lights when I'm in the sweet spot to drop the...

    Buffeting sound in 2015 EL

Thanks for the voice of reason. I always figure the engineers do things for a reason and would never spend money or add cost without a reason. Sometimes it takes a minute to figure it out.

New to me 07 Expedition El - crap mpg

What differential ratio do you have? Is it full time 4x4 or AWD? Stock wheels and tires or oversize? What engine? Each of these will affect mileage. That said, if it's set up as a stump puller, 10 to 11 mpg is not bad. However, if you have a V6, tall gears, 2wd and skinny tires you'd still...

Anybody Have Break-in Tips for 2017 Expedition?

My suggestion is to vary the speed of the engine continuously for the first 1500 or so miles. It might be worth doing the first oil change ahead of schedule in case there is any production debris remaining in the engine. Also, slow accelerations and gentle stops for the first 1500 or so miles...

What did you do to the expy today

I'm not a big fan of light bars. They look awful to me and I can't imagine they are very aero. Is there much wind noise from it? How about legalities ... head lights are required to be a certain distance from the road. I guess the bar can be used off-roading, but on paved roads I suspect it...

Wind noise ... how to find source?

Good advice! Thanks. I have been on the shop's case. They were even apologetic, giving me a Preferred Customer card entitling me to 5 free oil changes (ka-ching), but so far no resolution to the wind noise. I anticipate they'll get tired of me eventually. I am no longer a profit center!

    Scammed or Clueless? 2009 Expedition

Hmmmm.... used car dealer .... New Jersey .... sounds like a recipe for trouble! I lost a spark plug on my 99 and the dealer who failed to properly torque the plug thought helicoiling new threads into the old head was a reasonable solution. It wasn't. A different dealer replaced the head and...

Wind noise ... how to find source?

I recently had bodywork done on my 12 Ltd to fix a crease down the entire right side of the rig. During the process, everything was dismantled. Something seems to be missing, but I don't see what. There is a wind noise above 65 MPH in the area of the front of the passenger's door. I can't...
