    98 expedition 4.6 engine swap

I know what you mean. I think it was about $900 for for me to rebuild mine but that was with a new crankshaft with matched bearings, all new cloyes timing components, new oil pump, all new gaskets and seals, one new connecting rod, new piston rings for all pistons. I got all this from the dealer...

    98 expedition 4.6 engine swap

I can say also that rebuilding a 4.6 or 5.4 is not that difficult either if you wanted to go that route. I bought our 02 Expy with 200k miles with a rod knocking for $1200. Got the motor out and rebuilt it in my carport. Have put 100k miles on it since then. Or ya know you could do the swap and...

    98 expedition 4.6 engine swap

Yea all 02 models should have been PI equipped. Was just looking and reading and I think the sensors won't be a problem other than maybe their location vs locations of where yours are currently and if there is any extra sensors that the 98 doesn't have you could leave them unhooked and use your...

    98 expedition 4.6 engine swap

Ok. So apparently in 2001 some but not all truck had the updated PI heads and intakes. Best way to tell is to pull the intake and see the port shapes or find the casting numbers on the head. A PI should say PI. Pic shows non PI on left and PI on right.

    98 expedition 4.6 engine swap

Did a little reading and with the difference in the ports the intakes are not interchangeable. They make an adapter to put a PI intake on non PI heads but not the other way around. Let me look into this a little more to see if I can help you out.

    98 expedition 4.6 engine swap

The updated heads to my understanding was an improvement in the ports to flow more freely. As I stated earlier you can put the PI heads on an earlier engine. I may be wrong best way to know is look at the ports and bolt locations on both heads.

    98 expedition 4.6 engine swap

I would use your current intake, fuel rail/injectors, air cleaner assembly, basically everything from the air filter to the intake. That should will keep all your top end sensors the same. 98 and 01 are essentially the same except for the intake and being COP vs a waste spark style ignition and...

    4.6 timing question

To clarify my 98 f150 with the 4.6 does have the imrc valve. Or at least something stuck of the front of the lower portion of the intake lol.

    4.6 timing question

It may not. I know my 98 f150 with aluminum upper intake and plastic lower portion does have one. But on a brighter note I decided to do the carb cleaner trick one more time and did find a leak on the gasket between the upper and lower portion of the intake! I guess maybe with the clogged cats...

    4.6 timing question

Would a bad or stuck/broken IMRC valve cause lean codes only with no other codes and cause the rough running drivability issues?

    4.6 timing question

This one has 170k. My truck with 4.6 has 201k and my wife's expy with the 5.4 has 300k. I rebuilt it at 200k. That was the first time I've rebuilt a ford modular.

    4.6 timing question

Eh. I always buy cheap broken stuff (often to my wife's dismay lmao). I did mean to mention I did do a compression test and all cylinders were within a few psi of each other, can't remember the exact numbers but we're well over 100 and from what I've read anything over 110 is acceptable on...

    4.6 timing question

The thing is though if they were not firing should that not give me mis fire code?

    4.6 timing question

I may be over thinking everything just being frustrated lol. Luckily no inspections required at all where I live! The times I've heard of people loosing a tensioner or guide they had a lot of noise from the chains and valve train which I do not have. It's gotta be something I'm over looking. I...

Started thread in the engine forum for anyone following this! Seems it may be a bigger issue but I hope not!

    4.6 timing question

Ok. So I am no stranger to the Ford 4.6 and 5.4 engines. I have owned a few and currently have 3 vehicles with them and even rebuilt my 5.4 100k miles ago. I have an issue with a rig I just bought I just can't figure out. It's a 1997 with the 4.6L. Showing lean both banks and idles horrible...

    Help! Heater Hose Inlet Broke!

Yep. Easy and cheap fix! But those tabs can be troublesome... a word of advice. You will want to slick up the new o rings on the new fitting before trying to push it on the heater core line. Makes it go on much easier. I use a little dawn dish soap!

    1997 lean condition

It decided to turn off cold again here yesterday! I'll give it a couple of days to warm back up some since I am working outside lol. Wind chill here this morning was in single digits! High is only supposed to 28 but in this 50s this weekend thankfully! This vehicle is not our main ride ad we...

    1997 lean condition

The 1997 4.6L has the aluminum 2 piece intake. I have tried everything to check the gaskets short of tearing it apart. If it was leaking bad enough to cause the severe drivability issues I'm having. The water test and spraying of carb cleaner would have found it! That being said not saying that...

    1997 lean condition

Ok. So before I break loose the exhaust from the manifolds (rusty as all get out) I took my IR thermometer and did temp tests per what I found online so I let the engine run till it reached operating temp (roughly 10 to 15 minutes)... I didn't write down the numbers but here is what I observed...

    1997 lean condition

Opposite banks on the fouled plugs. Not sure the exact cause of it but or how long it had been that way. Once I replaced plugs and wires misfire code has not shown back up. Just the lean codes.

    1997 lean condition

Well I bought the rig on Monday from a lady who said it just lost power while driving and it wouldn't hardly go 10mph. I originally found 2 fouled plugs fixed that. That's probably what got to the cats. I'll look into checking the cats on that side and see what I come up with.

Live data info. No misfire codes just the lean codes for both banks.

    1997 lean condition

Ok. Well pulled some live data this evening and here is what I got... SHRTFT1- 1.6% (would go from -4ish to 8l LONGTFT1- 3.1% (this would vary some but no more than a few numbers) SHRTFT2- 10.2% (varied widely both positive & negative. LONGTFT2- 24.4% (varied widely ) SHRTFTB1S1- 3.1%...

    1997 lean condition

Yea I've sprayed carb cleaner all around the thing already. A couple of times lol. Didn't do anything that I noticed. Checked fuel trims today. Bank 1 trims never went over 10 either way but the long term on bank 2 stayed between 18 and 26! Truck isn't really drivable so this was done at idle.
