    Head gasket

I have a 1998 EB 5.4(original owner) with an E40D transmission and 337,000 miles and the head gasket has been leaking for probably about 6 years. I first became aware of the leak when the gauge went to H. I bought a thermostat with a check ball so that gas would be able to pass through the...

    Front end thunking

I would make sure your 4WD switch is functioning in all the modes when you have the truck in park or neutral(brake applied). Do you hear the engaging of the transfer motor? Note what lights are illuminated on the dash when you turn the 4wd switch(does it match the switch)? Are any lights...

    Transmission is toast?

Not that a 1998 Expedition and a 2018 have much in common, however, at 82,000 my transmission was abruptly slipping into 2nd. A Ford dealer back then told me it would be $3000 for a new transmission. After nursing the transmission by pulling my foot off at the shift going into 2nd I discovered...

    Hard Start Cold Engine

It turned out to be the Coolant temp sensor. Replaced with TX61(gauge wasn't working)...needed part TS380(w gauge). Replaced the crankshaft position sensor and air temp sensor.....all feed into the ECM....and can cause difficult cold start....so all done and were easy enough to replace. Has...

Air ride to springs/shocks in 1st gen 2001 EB 4x4?

I switched out the front and the rear as outlined above. I went with a 1" lift for the springs in the rear. For the rear shocks I ordered the correct bolts and Nord washers. My mechanic had to widen the mounts and drill out the holes to accomodate the bolts for the KYB 565019(made in Mexico)...

    Hard Start Cold Engine

The truck drained the 5 yr old battery today trying to start. Replaced with a new battery today from Costco. 3rd crank it started right up annd idled perfectly. You would never know there was any issues. Though I reported earlier it seems the engine was 'flooded'...it actually seems the...

    Erratic temp reading

Head gasket...get a thermostat with a check ball. It worked for me....it releases the gas building up...that pressurizers the system.

    Hard Start Cold Engine

1998 EB 5.4 328,000 miles....For sometime now truck is hard to start in cooler weather especially when sitting overnight. Once it starts it's a nearly perfect idle and there are no other issues during the day once the engine stays somewhat warm. New plugs, coil wires and a fuel pump(15,000...

Air ride to springs/shocks in 1st gen 2001 EB 4x4?

I have put on about 90,000 miles since I put RANCHO RS999112 on the rear and the RANCHO RS999237 on the front. It was Ok but still a bit bouncy even at a 10 on the settings. I am now switching to the KYB 565088 MonoMax Monotube upfront which FitsFront; 4WD; Lift Replacement Shocks; For Rancho...

Air ride to springs/shocks in 1st gen 2001 EB 4x4?

I have a 1998 Expedition 4x4 EB 5.4...original owner original engine/transmission(E4OD) and still going with lots of 'bandaids' (just replaced the springs/valves in the accumulator valve body) and check ball thermostat. I have used a conversion kit...never liked that...found used stiffer...

Track Bar...Air Bag or w/o Air Bag

Was wondering if anyone had any idea the difference in track bars for a 1998 expedition....one made for air bag suspension or without air bag suspension. I'm assuming the one made for expeditions w/o are made with heavier gauge steel. Are the dimensions and the holes for the bolts the same for...

    Flywheel trick?

I was wondering if anyone had an explanation as to why the technique of turning the key to the point right before starting, pausing, then starting works. Is it because a starter gear has a chance, going slowly, to fully engage vs turning quickly it sometimes finds the bad spot on the flywheel...

    Flywheel trick?

"Sometimes when I start mine too fast it'll screech. I take it all the way to on, wait till I hear the fuel pump engage (makes a little thunk), then starts fine." That's exactly what I do and it works every time without screeching.

    Flywheel trick?

Intermittently when you turn the key you hear a screech. When I back off turning the key you can hear spinning. Sometimes when I turn the key a 2nd time it can re-occur. It seems now when I try to start the truck by turning the key to the point just shy of starting the '98 expedition 5.4..the...

    Flywheel trick?

Flywheel issues with 1998 Expedition. It seems the frequency of the dreaded noise is occurring with greater frequency, however, it seems I found a 'trick' in turning the ignition. I slowly turn the key to the point at which the brake light shows right before you get ignition. At this point I...

Kick into 2nd gear at 20 mph

I have a '98 Expedition 5.4 Eddie Bauer build date 12/97. Gee mine has been doing the hard 1-2 shift since 87k miles now approaching 230k. I've been pulling my foot off the gas all those miles and years. No one has even said to me the fix was easy as changing a spring. I believe I have the...
