    Engine swap

I always thought the 3v was the less reliable motor. It has the troubling cam phasers, but I don’t think the 2v does.

Expy died with no warning and then revived itself. Thoughts?

When mine failed there was no visible damage to the plastic cube but there was some strangeness to the solder on one or two of the pins on the back of the board. My symptoms were identical to yours; it either ran perfectly or just cut out. It was happening with increasing frequency though, which...

Thinking of supercharging the 5.4 2v

Is there any available info of the capability of the rest of the power train to handle this upgrade?

2004 fuel pump failed and replaced(long story with tech info)

Thanks again for this extra informatio. Next time I’m down at the pick n’pull in San Antonio I’ll put the tank And interior plastic on my list :)

2004 fuel pump failed and replaced(long story with tech info)

Thanks! Very useful indeed. Mine had the same split below the nipple. Funnily enough I fixed mine around that very time. I looked at all the related posts in the 2nd gen forum but didn’t think to look at 1st gen!

2004 fuel pump failed and replaced(long story with tech info)

Thanks for taking the time to write this and congrats for getting the job done. My fuel odor has returned 2.5 years after my epoxy repair of the split vent seam so it looks like it’s coming down again. Your write up brought all those pain points back! Can you tell me what specific plastic rods...

Thinking of supercharging the 5.4 2v

This is excellent information, many thanks. And, of course, Merry Christmas. That’s a good deal for sure. I’m tempted to preemptively do the engine swap to avoid the expensive temptation to buy a Land Cruiser on BAT should it suddenly peg out. Thanks again.

Thinking of supercharging the 5.4 2v

I may be interested in replacing my 266k 5.4 2v at some point. Do you have a recommendation as to the source? There seems to be a number of choices.

    Steering wheel loose

Very interesting, thanks. I’ll chcek it out. I was just in there the other day to clean my cruise button contacts. A great success by the way, but getting those Torx screws lined up so they go into their homes was tough. If you don’t get it right the angled screw head prevents a button being...

    Steering wheel loose

I now have the same clonky noise in the steering wheel hub. In another of my cars I’ve replaced a sleeve that gets worn at the top of the column. I’ve been trying to find something similar for my 2003 expedition but not had any luck. Can’t seem to match the year model. There’s availability for...

mechanic wants me to get rid of expedition

This. Depreciation on new vehicles totally eclipse repair costs. When my 5.4 gives up, currently 261,000 miles, I’ll be doing the engine swap. Recently, I hit a deer at around 60mph. I got new headlamps from the internet, and visited the pick n’ pull in San Antonio for a front passenger door and...

How many miles on your 2nd Gen Ford Expedition?

More detail: i tried to use the Tolley's first off but was way too runny and just poured through the gaps. It advises repeated sparing treatment but it continued to pour through so i switched to the silicone. It is far, far more 'searching' than the standard flowable silicone sealer. i think...

How many miles on your 2nd Gen Ford Expedition?

i've just fixed my leaking rear side window. Large gaps develop between the window frame and the body work. i put in flowable silicone sealer meant for windshield repair. this gave a 99% improvement. I followed up with Captain Tolley's leak sealer (yeah, its a thing). 100% fixed!

P0171 & P0174 and Service Engine Soon Light

You have too much air or too little fuel getting into the engine. Look for easy things first. Vacuum leaks in hoses particularly at rear of engine. It helps to take off the plastic cover so you can inspect the many hoses. The hose to the brake booster is particularly prone to deterioration...

    Third row window water leak

My leak has been getting progressively worse. Dripping from the headliner edge into the plastic side tray. The leak point is definitely between the window frame and the bodywork. i tested it by by accurately placing water (i used a big plastic syringe) at the back of the seal with the window...

Fuel Tank 2003 Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4L

I've repaired mine and posted on the forum about it, as have others. Lots of photos. Should be searchable. One point though; this tank is plastic and can't rust. It usually gets a small split in an access port fitting on the top.

P0171 & P0174 and Service Engine Soon Light

That is really great news! I have no idea why these prices should be so different. Did the Motorcraft manifold come with the big insulating “box” under it?

P0171 & P0174 and Service Engine Soon Light

You might not like to find one lol… I looked at only a couple of random Ford OEM places and they were similar. Maybe others know better places. PS. Don’t tell anyone but I used a Dorman several years ago and it’s still ok. This is not an endorsement!

P0171 & P0174 and Service Engine Soon Light

It may be worth getting some spare plugs for the injectors and coils. These get brittle with age and the retaining tabs often come off when you’re messing with them which can lead to random misfires down the road. it’s been suggested here that removing the wire pins using a special toolset and...

That’s some good advice, thanks! You‘re right about the difficulty of soldering those wires!

How many miles on your 2nd Gen Ford Expedition?

Ticked over 250,000 miles last week! Since last repair report I can add: Replace brake booster as reservoir was full of gunk. Spark plugs again. Soldered on replacements for a couple of broken injector connectors. I‘m concerned my repair on the gas tank may have started to leak…

    Brake reservoir contamination

Thanks, sounds like a good plan. I’ve been guilty of flushing at the calipers and just topping up the reservoir. its pretty much impossible to get all the crud out of the corners and there‘s lots of inaccessible areas. The black bits concerned me too, looks like seal material. mostly it looks...
