Road trip coming up - preventative project ideas?

Should it be obvious what I'm looking for in terms of corrosion, etc., or do they fail at a connector or someplace that doesn't jump right out at a glance?

Road trip coming up - preventative project ideas?

I've owned my 2011 XLT for about 8 months now. The truck has over 180k on it, but the engine is a reman with about 40k. It has no issues that I can identify or anticipate, but I'm wanting to take the family on a 1,700 mile round trip vacation this summer, and I'm trying to think of things I...

Thump when stopping and sometimes when taking off

I've crawled around with a light and pulled on things with my hands - haven't used a prybar. I'm not sure where I'd pry? But you're absolutely right - it is under the floorboard (not through the wheel), and that's the best description: unloading. One out of every twenty times, you feel it a...

Thump when stopping and sometimes when taking off

Yeah, I'm at a loss. The transmission mount could be the problem, but I almost think no. I'm not even coming in for a stop in a hard torque condition when it happens. I brake for two blocks like the old man that I am and unless I completely release the brakes just as I stop, it's gonna do it...

What to look for when buying a gen 2 expy

I'm several years removed from owning my '04, but the major issues with it that caused me to want to sell are: - Rusted rockers (outers were gone, it was moving towards the inners) - Coolant leak in the intake manifold crossover. K Seal would stop it for awhile, but then it recurred, then K...

    Real world MPG results

Just returned from a 900 mile road trip with my '11 XLT. No lift, no mods. Got 18.9 on the way there, and a little over 18 on the way back. Closer to home, an even split between in-town and highway is in the 14-16 range.

Thump when stopping and sometimes when taking off

That actually makes a ton of sense, especially after looking at the design of that mount. I'm wondering if it can be "buffered" by filling it with polyurethane sealant, strips of rubber, etc., without having to replace the transmission mount right away?

Thump when stopping and sometimes when taking off

My 2011 XLT (175k mi), which I've only owned for a couple of months, has a pretty consistent 'thump' (it's somewhat muffled or muted) when coming to a stop, and only happens just as the vehicle has quit moving (not as you are slowing down). It's just one single thump that you sort of feel in...

    Mileage and switch to 5W30

Wow! Very encouraging! What's your secret to getting to 300k with no issues?

Returning member - need affirmation and encouragement

Also, those of you with a crystal ball: How many miles you think this might be good for given the new engine, assuming I change oil every 2500 miles and take impeccable care of it? 250? 300? This is the logic upon which my decision to purchase this rig was predicated. The only failures I...

    Mileage and switch to 5W30

I know through searches that this topic has been beat about thoroughly, and it sounds as if 5W30 will help with engine longevity at best, or at least not hurt anything at worst. My specific question is: I have a factory reman engine that now has 30K miles on it. Is it too low miles to make...

Returning member - need affirmation and encouragement

Thanks. Might go to the Gen 3 forum and ask specifically about switching to the 5w30 on the motor with 30k on it. Does age or wear factor into that switch? or in theory, should folks have switched to 5w30 at the first oil change?

Exactly the kind of thing I’m needing to hear! Thank you!

Returning member - need affirmation and encouragement

Well, I’m back! Had an ‘04 that I loved, but it was worn out and rusty and high mileage and I thought it was time to replace it. So this time - being a glutton as I am - I bought an ‘11 with 172k on the clock, but a 30k reman engine that was installed by the Ford dealership. The body is...

    Closer to buying one

I didn't think of an actuator, but that's exactly what it sounds like, now that you say that. I'll have to look into what all that entails.

    Closer to buying one

That sort of confirms what I thought. Would a ‘11 XLT (pretty plain with very few options) have air ride? My old ‘04 Eddie Bauer did, and the previous owner replaced them with solid coil-over shocks. That is one thing I didn’t think to check out when I was looking at it, and I’m still...

    Closer to buying one

Previous Expedition owner (2004) and looking to get back in the club with a 2011 that I’m looking at. This one seems really clean. Has a new-ish Ford motor with only 36,000 miles (truck has 175k). Two observations from yesterday’s test drive: When it was started cold, i heard a constant...

What to look for when buying a gen3 expy

I’m a former owner (Gen 2), and miss it for some reason, so looking at a Gen 3. This one’s a 2011 with 115k miles. I remember issues from my old one, and remember some of the concerns about the early Gen 3s, so here are some of my concerns, if you could give me some input: It looks like it...

Tie rod replacement with no alignment?

I can sort of anticipate the responses I may get to this question, but I'll ask it anyway. I have an 04 EB and just put a nice set of used tires on it. It has 185k miles. The truck's in good shape, but not stellar. I may keep it for a couple more years - I may decide to upgrade. The tire...

    I just need a name....

Oil dry, detergent and scrub brush, bleach and scrub brush - so far, made zero improvement. May just have to get 5 gallons of oil and stain the rest of the driveway so it matches

    I just need a name....

Anyone know the name of the Ford engineer that designed the plastic fan shroud to allow access to the oil filter? I'd like to have a little visit with him. Seeing as how the opening is at least a half an inch too small to allow for passage of a FL820s filter, I apparently popped the gasket off...

    Intermittent "Check Charging System"

Sorry for the slow response. Unless I have a problem, I'm guilty of not checking in here as often as I should (although I do make it a point to come back and report a result like I did). I know this will draw some criticism and I may learn the hard way, but I bought a super cheap one from...

    Driveline noises

I think I asked a similar question awhile back, but I thought I'd take another tack. I have a 2004 EB. On cold mornings (seems to be more noticeable when it's cold than when it's not), when going over slight undulations in the pavement, etc., I get a rubbing, 'wa wa wa wa' sound that sounds...

    Intermittent "Check Charging System"

Now that a month has passed, I thought I'd drop in with an update for future use. Replaced the alternator and all is good. No trouble since. Thanks again for the responses and help!

    Intermittent "Check Charging System"

I appreciate that! I'll run that check this morning before I go any further with it. Thanks for taking the time to respond and provide the attachment!
