No power loss over 19 years

No kidding; she’s a slug! Even worse is hitched to my 5,100-lb boat. 0-60…eventually.

No power loss over 19 years

Good afternoon, everyone. I’ve been playing with a Dragy device for the last few days, and I made a few runs in my Expedition this morning. It’s a 2004 2WD Eddie Bauer with the 5.4L V8 and 4R75W transmission. Only 138,600 miles because it’s a secondary vehicle that’s only used for towing...

    Engine swap 2014 5.4 into 2005 with 5.4

Anything is possible with enough time and money, but unfeasible. I don't believe any of the other modules in the truck are compatible. So you'd need to replace the instrument cluster, BCM, and a bunch of other control modules with it, as well as rewiring everything.

Loss of power, Started with towing and now at highway speeds. Please help!

That's not real likely. Powertrain components have to be built to withstand the maximum torque the transmission can send to the rear axle. None of the components take more load with a heavy trailer, but they do it for longer duration. This is only an issue if something overheats, but that's...

Loss of power, Started with towing and now at highway speeds. Please help!

Hey Ian, welcome to the forum! When I first read the title I thought "clogged catalytic converter," and this part supports that idea: As a converter starts to break down, it will introduce restriction in the exhaust most prominent when you're asking for high power levels from the engine. As...

I had to say how reliable things were the other day...

I was going to reply earlier, but it’s been a busy day. I haven’t spent much time on this form, but over the years the “rumble” noise in 2WD is a hallmark of an IWE actuator engaging when it shouldn’t. Usually because a vacuum leak in the system allows the spring in the hub to engage the...

You still want to go to those express lube places?

    I don’t see the problem. http://www.valvolinefilters.com/sites/default/files/2019_Complete_Filter_Guide.pdf

    2005 developed loud engine knock

Yikes… That's a raw deal. I think you'd be surprised. Those engines have been in production for more than a decade, and some have seen a lifetime of really long, hard use. A few years ago I found a thread in another forum with a couple examples over 300,000 miles with nothing more than...

    Spring rates.

I first saw this thread yesterday and thought "I have no idea". Then I remembered the spring specs published for Moog parts at Rockauto.com... Front: Rear:

2004 EB 5.4 Coolant Temperature Sensor location?

There is no coolant temperature sensor, just a cylinder head temperature sensor. The PCM infers coolant temperature from what it sees from the cylinder head temp sensor. The advantage to this is an accurate reading if air gets in the system. A classic coolant temperature sensor will read a...

2004 EB 5.4 Coolant Temperature Sensor location?

Right, but that's a different year which uses a different version of the 5.4. There aren't many similarities between the 3V and 2V engines, and the sensor is a completely different location. The OP is looking for the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor in the following diagram:

Installation of New AC Compressor & Components

I wrote this over tired last night before going to bed, and is a bit more confrontational than it should've been. I had the same attitude until my compressor failed because of how particular these systems are to contamination and minor leaks. Completely agree with the merits of having a shop...

Installation of New AC Compressor & Components

Refrigerant isn’t expensive at all… It’s come down a lot in recent years. I saved several hundred dollars doing it myself, even more if you consider all the parts I didn’t replace. 13 months on I’m happy I didn’t pay shop for work I was capable of doing.

Good information from the Savo, I've attached the relevant service manual info from the 2006 manual.

Installation of New AC Compressor & Components

That’s a tough one. I’ve had bad experience with aftermarket components, but sometimes the price difference seems worth the gamble to me. But like you, I’ve been burned in the past. Using my normal rule of “is it worth my time to replace this thing again if it fails” I would have picked...

Installation of New AC Compressor & Components

Sorry to have completely missed this first time around. Nope, I didn't do a thing the compressor other than bolt it in place and connect the lines. It was one of the easiest belt-driven accessory installations I've done, but I had more access from underneath than you would with a four-wheel-drive.

Installation of New AC Compressor & Components

I bought a Four Seasons compressor from Rockauto.com, which also came pre-filled with oil. I filled the system with a 3-oz oil charge can when I recharged, and haven’t had any issues. I have no way of knowing how much oil leaked out of the system, in the shop manual recommended disassembling the...

Installation of New AC Compressor & Components

How did the old compressor fail? Some kind of internal failure or is it leaking? The compressor in my '04 2WD started leaking last summer, and my replacement was relatively painless. From the shop manual: Mine was working fine until replacement, but was on borrowed time because it was...

    10W30?

This is been endlessly debated since Ford change the standard to 5W-20 almost 20 years ago. A few years ago I spent a lot of time on BITOG another oil forums trying to learn more, as well as perform a half-dozen oil analyses to see for myself. In the end, the idea that thicker oil is helpful...

Any high performance radiators for these things? And electric fans?

Do you tow anything? I have a tough time thinking of a situation where the factory radiator would be insufficient. Even flogging this thing from stoplight to stoplight towing the boat, I can't get coolant temperatures over 210° with outside temperatures in the mid-90's. Electric cooling fans...

    Cost of Ownership

Disagree with that. Yes, I can afford it. I’ve had a couple of Priuses, they were great cars with about the lowest cost of operation in existence. But they sure won’t tow my boat. I can afford a lot more than I otherwise would because I think cost of operation matters.

    Interesting issue read inside

Good evening, Without knowing what year your truck is, it's tough to say for sure. And just to clarify, you imply a misfire in cylinder one… So the mean P0103 or P0301? P0103 is a MAF circuit failure, p0301 is a misfire on cylinder one.

    Cost of Ownership

I just wanted to chip in and say THANKS for posting this! You keep outstanding records, and this is useful in a number of ways. I like how you noted which repairs were done professionally in which you did yourself, and the cost difference is substantial.

"HD" tow package 2005 Eddie Bauer

YES… Towing down south you want to monitor your transmission temperatures. My 5.4 L Expy has a slightly larger transmission cooler than the 4.6 L models do, and I've seen temperatures go north of 200° towing my 3500-lb boat. This is in mid-80° temps in up here in Minnesota. You may or may...
