5.4L Triton timing set, replace oil pump?

Great job on this, J! I've read almost all of this thread from start to finish and am in awe how you overcame this b*tch of a job. Most people would've abandoned and towed it into a garage. Congrats on a job well done and on your perseverance! It is truly commendable! I've noticed mine...

    f150 rims on a Gen 3

Cutting rear axle ends won't hurt anything. I did it on a GMC Jimmy back in the day for the same reasons (fitting an older mag with a tight center cap). I did wheel bearing hubs on that GM later in its' life and it wasn't a problem. Just make sure you take a file to the axle end afterwards and...

How to kill TPMS module reporting in your Expedition (ForScan)

Yes, I remember the thread you made on it. That was thinking outside the box, my friend! I loved the simplicity of that idea. I was contemplating doing the same, but honestly this is a far better and longer lasting solution. The whole TPMS is offline now : no sensor batteries or faulty modules...

How to kill TPMS module reporting in your Expedition (ForScan)

...and here's why I did it. Originally, my SSV came with the Ford heavy duty steel rims (as can be seen in my avatar pic). I needed something nicer looking for the summer :

How to kill TPMS module reporting in your Expedition (ForScan)

Last fall I got some very nice 18" Ford rims off a 2004 F-150 for the Expy. They came with regular tire valves though, no TPMS sensor in them. New sensors would've cost more than I paid for the rims + tires... not interested. I've just had them balanced and put them on last week. The TPMS...

Dealer says rack/pinion leaking at both ends....

When replacing the AC compressor, they need to do a whole bunch of other steps and parts. Perhaps they missed something. Here's a good video of what's involved :

Dealer says rack/pinion leaking at both ends....

Are you losing a lot of PS fluid? If not, then just add some every few weeks / months. From the picture it looks like it's just "sweating", not leaking (lots of old road debris stuck to it + no sign of droplets). There are also products that can help re-seal (swell up) gaskets in the system...

Melling oil pumps are a waste of time and money.

I agree. For what it costs vs. the cost of a new engine down the road (maybe or maybe not), it's a cheap insurance policy. That's the way I see it. I'd rather put that in and feel better for the next 10 years that my truck's engine will probably never have a catastrophic failure, as opposed to...

Melling oil pumps are a waste of time and money.

Hordes of blown cam phasers and rollers-followers on the passenger side of engine (consistently!) are MY proof. All due to a lack of PROPER LUBRICATION, as per pros who have worked on dozens of these, including a Ford dealership mechanic friend of mine. He wants me to hook him up with a Melling...

Melling oil pumps are a waste of time and money.

Exactly. It is also why I find this thread's title completely stupid and baseless : "Melling oil pumps are a waste of time and money." It's quite a bold statement for someone who never used one. It's kind of like the folks who claim with absolute certainty that "Man never went to the Moon"...

Melling oil pumps are a waste of time and money.

It is your choice. I'll be going with the Melling myself and ditch Ford's piss poor design... just for the added peace of mind, if nothing else. I'm fairly sure I have a collapsed roller-follower tick on the passenger side too at 132k miles, after viewing this (at 11:27 mark)... due to poor OEM...

Melling oil pumps are a waste of time and money.

Makuloco and the Car Wizard on YouTube (both claiming to have worked on dozens of these 5.4L) seem to disagree. The biggest issue with these, apparently, is oil passages being too restricted and the resulting lack of lubrication. The lack of lubrication is what is said to cause the cam phaser...

Melling oil pumps are a waste of time and money.

The FoMoCo oil pump is garbage and the backing plate distorts under load, thus restricting the supply of oil at a critical time. I think over 2,000 RPM if I remember what I've been reading about it.... For what they cost, I will give Melling a shot (already bought one, ready for an install this...

    Sheared off transmission pan holt

Yup, then just leave it. As long as the other bolts are torqued right, it shouldn't leak. If you're really concerned about it though, you can use some high temp Permatex liquid gasket to seal the mating surfaces on the outside lip, plus the bolt hole. I did it once on the crank seal of a GMC...

    Sheared off transmission pan holt

Why did you delete your post #14? Luckily, I copy & pasted it before you did (post # 17). Lying piece of sh*t! "Repair the bolt". Brilliant! I'm sure he would've never guessed that it was an actual option without your valuable contribution, MrMediocre. You sooo smaaart! Btw, no one cares...

So you're not only an idiot who can't post properly, you're also a liar. Here's your reply in post #14 that you messed up :

    Sheared off transmission pan holt

By the way, you screwed up the quote / reply, genius. Your replied directly in my "quote" from previous post. When you "fix" things on cars (or anything else), you have to work smarter, not harder. My fix has help up to this day - the truck is still on the road and the pan doesn't leak. It did...

    Sheared off transmission pan holt

I did my trans fluid / filter change a few months ago and torqued it by hand feel too (not enough room for a torque wrench under the exhaust pipe anyway). My trick for light duty parts is to torque the bolt till it comes to a stop, then give it another 1/4 turn. Using a small ratchet or...

    Noise on start up

x2 on the timing chain tensioner, the chain slap sounds pretty bad too! You don't want to keep it like that for long, as the timing guides will disintegrate into chunks, block oil pickup tube + oil passages in that Triton and blow the engine. I just ordered new tensioners and guides from...

    Camshaft and lifters

I'm not sure the Permatex would do anything, plus I hate to do that kind of a bitch of a job twice, lol! I've read some good things about the "upgraded" Melling brand tensioners. They are cast iron and not supposed to warp or blow gaskets. Melling is the same company who came up with the HV...

    Camshaft and lifters

The 5.4L 3-valve had a revision in 2011, I believe. The de-facto issue with all of them is that the oil passages are too thin. They apparently addressed some of it, but it's still not great. This is why a "high volume" oil pump is recommended - otherwise use thicker oil to raise pressure. There...

    Camshaft and lifters

Oil sludge is said to kill them pretty quickly. Hence why it's always good to run synthetic oil only in these and do oil changes regularly, even before recommended intervals. Makuloco on YT has videos of opening sludged-up 5.4L engines that have been neglected. It's really something...

    Sunroof stuck open

Congrats on doing the work yourself! If I had one, I just wouldn't use it myself (even though our summers get really hot too). I like to roll down the windows instead. I'd rather replace a window motor than have to tear the whole interior apart, lol. Plus I hate how sunroofs take 2-3" off...

    Coolant leak on 2016

About 45 minutes total, working slow and taking my time. It's 4 bolts that hold the pump in place, plus 4 smaller ones to remove the drive belt pulley. Make sure you have new coolant on hand, as most of it will piss right out, lol! :)
