I bought a 2019 expedition max 2 years ago. And usually the first thing I do is change all the fluids. This one with all the crap going on I never got a chance to. Today I had that chance. The fluid was not good I don't see any flakes but that fluid smells burned.

Back in the day flushing the entire fluid wasn't a problem. However I have been told it's almost impossible to flush the fluid as we used to because the transmission now has a temp thermostat that keeps the fluid from flowing thru the fluid until it's a certain temp.

Is this true.? I will want to replace all the fluid in there if I can because of the condition of the fluid. If not I will just plan on a few more fluid replacements without the filter to get the majority replaced. But it's more work so I was hoping that it wasn't true.

I went to the dealer for a trans fluid change, they showed me a letter from Ford that stated that Ford does NOT recommend a fluid change before 150,000 miles. They wouldn't do it, crazy, huh.
I'm going to do it myself anyway.

Well, if it's under warranty, I would suggest you wait & let them do it at the appropriate time, so as to NOT void your warranty & you will have proof that it was done at the right time. If no warranty then go for it & be happy

Yea, hard to imagine a stealership turning down easy money, whodathunkit was possible :)

The vehicle they refused to do the fluid change on is actually my '19 F150 diesel, same transmission. I will do it myself, it is the easiest ford to change the fluid on, nothing in the way.

This is a very good video. My dealer also refused to change the fluid since the sway bar has to be dropped down (4 bolts) and there’s many shields around the pan and the cooler to swing out of the way so they claimed it would be about $600. I did it myself and it was no problem. I’d strongly recommend to do it before 100k if you plan to keep your truck and it can never hurt but like the video says - the track record of these 10 speeds is so bad many of them will need to be overhauled for the CDF drum issue anyway.

The CDF drum failed on mine and left me stranded 1200 miles from home and was rebuilt by my dealer. Unfortunately, it was before the updated CDF drum so I still have a ticking time bomb of a transmission. Love the truck but Ford should really be stepping up helping customers update these transmissions and would gain a lot of loyal customers if they did!

You will never get all the fluid out. Unless you pull the trans and drain the torque convertor. Fluid color is not always a good indicator. A burnt smell is a better test aside from sending it to a lab. Changing whatever fluid you can and the filter wont harm the trans and MAY do some good if you are positive the fluid is bad. Flushing is another thing. Back in the day it was simple 3 speeds. Now most all manufactures recommend against flushing.

The Dangers Of Flushing...

Flush machines do what they say; they force high pressure cleaning solvents back through the engine and transmission and clean out some of the accumulated junk that has formed. Now engines have small passages and galleries through which oil or automatic transmission fluid flow and there are one-way valves that keep the fluids from backtracking for whatever reason. By using an aggressive cleaning procedure like flushing, large chunks of accumulated sludge are broken off and forced backwards through these galleries and valves and, more often than not, lodge tightly and block them. This cuts off the normal flow of the fluid and causes lack of lubrication in an engine and abnormal or no shifting in a transmission. The results are expensive repairs, or more often, engine or transmission replacement.

Funny, my Ford dealer recommended the trans flush procedure at 100k Since they were the ones that rebuilt the valve body assembly at 60k miles and something else that I can’t remember 10k miles later, all under warranty I let them do what they wanted.

Well I wasn't planning on doing a flush machine. If I can't do a old school flush. I would rather just change the fluid 2-3 times to get rid of that burnt stuff. Obviously I won't get it all but I will get the majority.

I had the CDF fail at 38,000, repaired under warranty. It was repaired with the same crappy part and it just failed again at 78,400 miles. I’m stuck with a $7500 bill this time.
