Is it possible to swap a 2004 instrument with a 2006 being the new one? If so what could I do to make it happen?

The cluster is basically another computer module and as such is likely to require programming. At the very least for the other modules to accept it. This is just based on my experience with OBDII scanning on my 2004 and reading stuff here. So I may be incorrect.

thought i'd update this for anyone else looking. i recently got an '04 XLT without the message center and i wanted it, so i got a cluster from an '06. can't even plug it in. on the '04 cluster, the plugs are on the bottom. on the '06, they're in the back near the top. and here i thought since the '03-'06 are all 2nd gen that it'd all be interchangeable

I have found 03 and 04 are the same series on most stuff and 05 and 06 are a completely different series. Major stuff is different, engines and fuel systems. The early cars have throttle cables and a return on the fuel system the late ones are drive by wire and no return on the fuel. Plus a thousand other differences.
