I have 2005 4wd. First gear started slipping last Friday. Car barely moves. Reverse ok.
110k miles. Fluids ok. Replaced output speed sensor. No improvement. Appt for shop next week. Any thoughts? No previous problems. No noise. Maintenance kept up well.

Sounds like either a bad forward pump, or burnt clutch pack. Is your fluid clean and pinky? Or is it burnt smelling and brown?

Well that's a good sign. Any transmission codes on scanner?

P2106 is a limp home mode. This usually happens when a major component like a transmission fails. The computer senses a major problem and puts in 2nd gear, so you can slowly get it home or to a garage. I had this scenario in a Dodge Caravan I drove as my Taxi years back. It took off in 2nd and stayed there. I couldn't find your first code, but I'd have a transmission shop check it out, it's possible they might be able to save it.

P0720 is what I think he meant. It's a speed sensor code. It's possible it's more than the sensor, possibly the wiring. Or the new sensor is defective.

I had a very similar problem with my ‘06 2 years ago. Ended up being a small check ball in a valve that required dropping the tranny. Expensive repair for a very small piece. Possibly that. Also the only place that was able to figure this issue out was a ford dealership...
