My wife would love to have a new fully loaded Ford Expedition or Lincoln Navigator, but with the current car market i would rather take vacation with the family, home improvement projects. I'm a person that like to keep vehicles for long term use and the current price for these suv are ridiculous to buy over $1,100 plus a month. I can find some lease deals on them around $800 plus, then higher insurance and registration. I just fill it is a waste of my money and my family. My current truck is loaded with every option for it's time, it drives very well, towing is excellent. I had had zero problems with it since i have owned it other than the timing issue that didn't show up until about a year ago. It was a simple choice do the repair and have the expert Brian at BSG Automotive do it.
Best decision to pay $6,500 and I can keep the other $90,000 in my pockets. I can wait it out for a new suv prices to decline.
Your timing chain tensioner gaskets have failed causing too much slop in your timing chain. That slop has probably broken your plastic timing chain guides that
cause rattling on start up. The leaky tensioner gaskets also bleed off oil pressure that is needed to operate your cam phasers correctly, thereby causing hot idle rattling or knocking noise. This is the most common issue with the 5.4 3 valve engine and simply requires a replacement of the timing components to include the timing chains, tensioners, guides and cam phasers. In addition I would replace the oil pump with higher volume Melling unit plus VVT solenoids and cam roller followers to truly bulletproof the engine. Its about 1500 dollars in parts if you do it yourself and Im guessing $3000 including labor maybe more. Is it worth it? I had to do mine at 100,000 miles but the truck was otherwise in fantastic shape so yes it was worth it.
