Just drove 500mi round trip with my 2011 Expedition King Ranch. Back country roads from South Alabama to North Alabama and back. Used Regular 87 and averaged 21 mpg. Not bad for a 5.4L engine with 195k miles on it.

Is it a 2WD or 4WD truck? My 2011 4WD has never done better than a 17.5 / 18.0 highway average and I needed to stay at 70 or below to get that.

If I were here, you would know it !
My '011 averages ~15-16 with mostly highway miles, all in 2WD @~60-65mph & Sunoco/Exxon 91 gas. I have 4WD available but have only used it 2-3 times in 5 years during massive snow storms :)

However, I recently replaced the standard air filter with an aftermarket, hi-performance oiled one & replaced the MAF with a new OEM unit, in addition to being well maintained on all the other normal stuff.

Prior to the above, it was down in the 10-12 range :(

Wow, even on E-85 and being heavy on the throttle around town I usually get 13 mpg. Around town I usually fill up with non-ethanol fuel and keep my tank 1/4-1/2 full as I can go a week without driving it. I use the regular fuel with 10% ethanol when traveling long distances as I am just burning through a full tank. I will get E-85 when I come across it and I have less than 1/4 tank. It does give a better throttle response at the cost of mpg.

Not to spoil the party, but are you talking actual MPG that you calculated based on mileage when you fill up or are you talking about the MPG readout in the Expy? My '11 Expy MPG readout has been 1.2 MPG high since new compared to calculating it manually when I fill up. The higher the MPG readout, the greater the error. My 2000 Expy had a 0.6 MPG error on the high side and my 2023 F-150 has a 1.6 MPG error. This is compared to my wife's Toyota that has near zero error. A 21 MPG readout on my '11 would probably be an actual of about 19.5 (which would be hard to achieve with 4WD). I also find that wind has a huge impact on MPG with an Expy. That tailgate is a huge sail. A good tailwind can bump my MPG by 1.5 to 2 MPG.

Even with your suggested "error" with 195k miles, that is still a respectable mpg. Not sure how much wind played into the calculation as I went north then 4 hours later went south for a total of 512 miles. I probably could have made it there and back without a fuel stop, but didn't want to risk running out of fuel with my spouse in the vehicle. I also idled it for a bit at the location.

Agree that it's respectable or better. Even 19.5 MPG on an '11 would be exceptional. I can squeeze out 17.5 MPG at 60 MPH with the AC off on my '11. It has 300,000 on it.

I've noticed I can pick up at least 3-4 MPG hwy if I have some cars or trucks I can "draft" vs driving solo. I'm not tailgating, just benefitting from the reduced aero drag with another couple cars or more in front of me.
