I have a 2014 XLT that I love. I am looking at trading it in for a 2017 or 2018. I found a 2017 left over at a great price (no miles on it)

What would you do?

I think the better question is 17 vs 19’. If it’s between 17 and 18 I say go 17’. 10 years of history and development with the bugs worked out vs a new model with plenty of them. If you read around the truck forums the gen 2 ecoboost is having some VCT system/ timing set issues (failing camphasers and related parts). Reports of startup rattles and knocks are related. Some EB owners have a hunch they are coming from the factory with oil passages obstructed. The gen 1 is pretty solid and while this is known to occur it’s not heard of much like in the gen 2 where there are threads pages long. I’m sure both will be great motors if maintained. I’d say get the 17’ or a later build ecoboost 19’. Better yet keep that 14’ as a backup truck.

They both have Ecoboost. The 2018 has 10 more HP. I do love the reliability of my 2014

The 2017 has gen 1 3.5 and 2018 has gen 2 3.5. All I’m saying is the gen 2 is showing some teething problems with the timing set (much like early Triton 3V motors). I’m sure majority will be good engines when maintained though. 14’ was the best built and final year for the 5.4L.

Sadly the two are two totally different animals!
The 2017 is a work horse with so much testosterone lol, the 2018 is a pimped out wagon to me!

LoL, at this budget you're in I'd say drive both even though I know 99.988865675537926783910001754919777763501663% will choose the 2018 over the 2017 because of many many factors due to grocery getting factors over what a true SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE is suppose to be!!!! their wives have too low self esteem to realizes that a minivan is just not their cup of tea!

What makes you want to ditch the 2014? If it runs well and isn’t giving you problems, the 2017 really wouldn’t be much of a change. For me, I couldn’t imagine spending the money to “upgrade” from a 2014 to a 2017 since they are so similar. I’d either keep the 2014 or bump up to the 2018/2019.

You present a good point there as well.

Seems like neither of yous have driven an EcoBoost powered F150/expedition, I must say the difference between the 5.4 to the 3.5TT is astonishing! I can't for the life of me support the 2018+ station wagon expdition market but the engine has it figured out! It's really does haul ass like a **** (once boost builds up) and then some.... the 5.4 might have some more low end torque but the 3.5tt really is ages ahead of the 5.4 in driveability pleasure.

5.4 with the previous 4 speed was kind of a slug compared to the eco sure, but the 6 speed really woke it up in the 3rd gen. The EcoBoost is def quicker but not by a whole lot. With power output comparable in the same gen, your not “upgrading” all that much. Here is a 5.4L 4 speed vs 6 speed action that highlights the difference, same motor. Besides that both great motors, but I don’t think speed and racing is #1 priority on the expy lol. I’d honestly keep the 14,.
