I heard a noise while driving this week, and the AC stopped blowing cold. Everything seems to be working normally, except the air is hot. I observed the compressor clutch was not engaging, and I later tried to turn it by hand. It won't budge.
- I have have Forscan and a pretty good scan tool, and there are no trouble codes.
- I was able to confirm that the compressor is getting 13.4V.
- The compressor was very hot to the touch after running for 10 minutes, and the belt is rusty red on the groove side.
Everything points to a bad compressor. I want to change it myself, and I have built/repaired several basic 134a systems. These systems seem quite a bit more complicated, and parts and refrigerant are quite pricey. There's also the unknowns about front and rear components on the SUVs.
Has anyone taken on this type of repair?
