My 2020 Expy transmission was having many of the telltale signs that the 10R80 was not working as intended.
-Hard engagement from park to reverse/drive
-Clunky shifts between 5-3 on downshifts when decelerating.

Problems started at ~37K, but I kept seeing Ford dragging their feet on really fixing the problem with the CDF drum, so I waited as long as I could and called my local dealer about a month before the 5-year powertrain warranty expired, and made sure a loaner was reserved. The car went in with about 5 days left on the warranty.

The tech verified the conditions, found no codes, and rebuilt the transmission under TSB 25-2026C with the latest CDF drum part number JL3Z-7H351-B. Time in the shop ~5 weeks.

I picked up the truck on a Friday night and left for a ~1200 mile trip to Canada the next morning. Everything was going fine until driving home. I had one weird shift downshift from 10-9-8 at 75mph. I don't know if the transmission just had a little burp, or it was a combo of the adaptive cruise and changing lanes to overtake slower traffic. Next thing I know I see the transmission temperatures climb and match or exceed the coolant temps. Temperatures topped out at 230F on both coolant and transmission temperature. I took her off cruise and slowed down to see if things would cool down and they did.

For the rest of the trip the transmission temps stayed 10-20 degrees below the coolant temps. For the most part the transmission stayed around 203F.

Any thoughts?

Old junk thermostat see my other posts. Redesigned thermostat fixed my strange transmission temp issues and the engine coolant temps.
Old one on the left new one on the right bag has the new part number.

Now normal transmission temps on the highway run 183-190 push it hard 200-201. Haven’t towed the boat yet but expect to see more stable and lower temperatures.

You mean RT1252 is the new one?

I had some work done on my transmission and had a similar problem the first time I towed my trailer after (wonky shifts, high temps). I looked under the Expy and saw transmission fluid sprayed all over. The dealer looked at it and said it must have been overfilled and it released some fluid from an overflow valve on top of the transmission. I didn't have the problem again after that, so maybe it really was overfilled, causing extra pressure and temperature under load. It basically fixed itself after releasing that fluid. Hopefully it's something simple like that on yours too.
