I just acquired a 2020 Limited with just under 38k miles. The vehicle was purchased new by my dad and he gave it to me this week after deciding, at 74 years old, that he shouldn't be climbing up into a big vehicle any more. I am very happy to be back in an Expedition, but apprehensive of all the fun little adventures I had with my 2018 that I traded in last year as the extended warranty expired.
The only noticeable issue I have found with this truck is that there is a weird rattle coming from the steering column. Its most audible when driving on a slightly bumpy road or running over the reflectors in the roadway. Its a light metallic rattle and it is really not loud at all. Its not constant, only if the truck is suffering some kind of outside force vibration causing event (speed hump, bumps, reflectors, rumble strip, etc). If I hold the steering wheel and push it either up or down firmly while its rattling, the noise will stop. There is no shake or vibration in the wheel, the rattle cannot be felt, only heard, and it turns smoothly. I have adjusted the power column adjustments to their vertical and horizontal limits and no position of the wheel seems to affect the rattle at all. If I use my palm and bump the wheel, you can hear the rattle in the column with each hand bump motion - its just one rattle per bump, not an ongoing nose.
Before I start taking stuff apart and digging in, I figured I would see if anyone recalls this issue in the past or if there might be something known going on. I found one video about a column noise, but that related to a clunky rattle when the power adjustment motor was actuated and this is definitely different than that.
I tried to make a video so people can hear it, but its honestly not loud enough for my phone to get it. But having personally driven my previous 4th gen Expy for well over 100k miles, I know its not normal. Any thoughts are appreciated.
