2022 Expedition XLT 13.5 mpg

Hello we recently purchased a clean 22 XLT, Max Tow pkg. with about 10,000 miles on it. We did a leveling kit and are running 275/60/20 tires. This vehicle has averaged around 13.5 mpg for the past 3k miles and I am wondering why it doesn’t do any better? As far as hwy miles we have only driven it up to the mountains and back with lots of gas guzzling hill climbs. Tomorrow we will be driving to Topeka KS so we will be able to get a better idea of mpg between fuel stops. How much should I expect on our long drives across Texas and Oklahoma at 75mph? Does Eco mode make much of a difference? My 2020 F150 with Whipple Stage 2 kit and 285/75/17 does much better than this truck, around 16 mpg around town if I drive light footed. Anyways I hope to check in this week with some real time data. Will run the tires at 40 psi all around. They are FALKEN wild peak at4w load range D.

My new to me 2021 gets 19-20 doing that speed on my 220mi round trips to Naples, FL (flat).

Are you checking mpg with the vehicle computer, or actual calculation of fuel used and miles? When you went to the larger tire did you have the computer changed to the new tire size? If you did not have the computer updated and using the dash MPG, the calculation will be off as you are running a 3% larger tire now. Also with a load range D over a standard SL Falken Wildpeak AT4W you added 10lbs of rolling weight at each corner. Added rolling weight will always contribute to lower MPG, not much, but it will be lower. I basically did similar tire size and weight change to my 2012 F150 3.5 eco boost and went from avg of 20mpg highway to just over 14mpg and that was having the computer updated. Truck looked better, but that comes with a price.

you are running a 3% larger tire now. Also with a load range D over a standard SL Falken Wildpeak AT4W you added 10lbs of rolling weight at each corner. Added rolling weight will always contribute to lower MPG

Bigger tires = more weight = lower mpg... no doubt about it

And adding 40Lbs of weight to an already heavy vehicle will do you no favors in this respect, similar to what happens when towing something...but then it's even worse due to the additional friction & resistance...

And the fact that you are driving @75mph isn't helping either.....same as above: more speeeed = lower mpg !

What axle does your F-150 have? I'm guessing is has a 3.31 based on your stated MPG. The Max Tow expedition has a 3.73 rear end- more pull at the expense of MPGs especially around town.

I've got a '21 FX4 with the max towing package. 3.73 gearing..brake controller and the back up assist. I get a constant 16-17 mpg around our little country town with 45 to 55 mph speed limits. On the highway 21-22 mpg depending on speed and road conditions. I live in flat as a pancake Louisiana but did average 19.1 mpg on a 1400 mile round trip to Branson, Mo. and back. I'm running 33 inch BFG KO2's but I usually just run the posted speed limits or under depending on weather. I usually run 87 octane but when towing our 8K pound camper I'll up it to 93. Keeping out of the turbo's will give great fuel mileage!!

Last Fall, we took our '20 Limited MAX on a roadtrip from Monument, CO to Alamosa, CO, Antonito, CO, Chama, NM, Pagosa Springs, CO, over Wolf Creek Pass back to Alamosa. We left Monument with a full tank. Upon getting back to Alamosa, we filled up and the range to empty was over 700 miles! The MAX has a 33 gallon tank, but we have never seen anything much over 500 miles during normal daily driving. The fuel economy display was over 22 MPG where normally it hovers around just over 20. Thus the steady highway driving greatly improved the MPG over the normal city driving we do. We have 20-inch highway tires, AWD vs. 4X4 and no towing package.

So many variables happen determining gas mileage. terrain, tires, gross weight, etc.
Here on the flat roads in Florida, I get 18.2 mpg city and over 25 mpg highway at 65mph. One trip to Atlanta, in eco mode I achieved 28.2 mpg all highway.

I see 12-14mpg for the short around town trips we take. That is fairly normal. It doesn't get better mileage until it is on open road. I never noticed much better mileage in eco vs normal, maybe it was slightly better around town but not enough to matter. Once on the highway at a steady pace it doesn't matter if you are in eco, normal, sport, mileage seems the same.
